Harry Kane has criticised the “standards” at Tottenham Hotspur in an open and honest interview ahead of the club’s Premier League clash with Aston Villa this weekend.
Spurs travel to Villa Park on Saturday winless in their last six away games, having last won on the road back in January against Fulham. Kane’s goals have been key to the amount of points his side have won in what has been a poor campaign for Tottenham.
Villa would go level on points with Ryan Mason’s team with a win, which would set up a grandstand finish to the campaign as the race for European football hots up. Ahead of Saturday’s clash, Kane has admitted the club hasn’t moved backwards since Mauricio Pochettino left the club in November 2019.
Harry Kane said: “It’s been a difficult season. Probably the last couple of years, the last two or three, we haven’t been where we want to be as a club, so ultimately, there’s some internal stuff we need to talk about. We need to discuss some of the standards around the team and the training ground, which we need to get back to. We had [standards] those in place when Mauricio Pochettino was here, so internally we need to do that. The chairman [Daniel Levy] will make a decision on what he thinks is best for the club, in terms of the coach and who he wants to bring in, the players to go and who he wants to bring in. I always think you’re never too far away from being competitive with the right people, but also, you’re never too far away from dropping down to 10th or 11th place in the Premier League because that is the standard. It’s an important moment for the club, to feel a connection again with the fans, who I know have been frustrated with these moments. We need to try to build that relationship back up and try to push all in the same direction.”
