Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has come out fighting this week and he has defended his players from the critics starting to circle.

Chris Wilder said “The start to the season doesn’t sit well with us. But people shouldn’t be embarrassed about it, we are giving everything we can do for the football club, which I have always said is key. Players have not always done that in the past, but not under my watch. There’s a view about us from our supporters at the moment, which we have to accept, but as always we will stick together and fight our way through it. That’s the beauty of what I have created here among the players and the staff. We are a tight group and we will stick together and fight our way through it.”

The Blades boss is in defiant mood after watching his side pick up just one point from their opening five matches. They find themselves in the bottom three with a trip to champions Liverpool up next but he has vowed to ensure his players will continue to fight in the manner that has got them to this stage of their careers, in their bid to turn their form around. Wilder watched his side produce their best 45 minutes of the season in the first half against Fulham, creating numerous chances. They were unable to make the visitors pay and in the end had to settle for a point courtesy of Billy Sharp’s late penalty. It was not the result he was after and he admitted that ‘it’s tough to watch’ right now. However, he says despite the criticism coming his team’s way, the players will continue to fight their way out of trouble and says unlike previous teams in United colours, his players will not down tools.
