Chelsea and Germany frontman Timo Werner has heaped praise on France’s Karim Benzema ahead of next week’s Euro 2020 clash between the two.

Timo Werner said: “Of course you learn something from a striker like Benzema. Just because he has achieved a lot, but also because of his quality. For me, he is incredible with the ball, the way he dribbles, the way he moves, the way he finishes. I think he’s like Roberto Firmino at Liverpool, getting the ball early, distributing and still being quick with his qualities in the penalty area. With Robert Lewandowski and Cristiano Ronaldo, he forms the top three centre-forwards for me.”

Benzema was called up for his country this summer after six years out in the cold. Werner will be hoping he can get back to his best this summer for Joachim Low’s side, who face off against holders Portugal on June 19 before facing Hungary on June 23. Werner ended the season with ten goals across the Premier League and Champions League, a low number considering his xG (expected goals) tally was 18.5, suggesting his finishing was poor. Despite his domestic struggles, he was still called up for this summer’s European Championships with his native Germany drawn in the same group as Portugal, France and Hungary. Werner will likely be involved as Germany face France on Tuesday and he has been full of praise for France’s Karim Benzema ahead of their clash.
