Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson says the Magpies must learn their lessons after throwing away two points against Southampton. Steve Bruce’s side had led twice in the second half through Wilson’s strike and Allan Saint-Maxmin’s thunderous effort in injury time. But a VAR penalty handed the Saints a draw after Jamaal Lascelles fouled Adam Armstrong to allow James Ward-Prowse the chance to level.
Callum Wilson said: “It’s crazy. Football is harsh at times. We still haven’t learnt our lesson. It’s obviously frustrating – everyone is frustrated but it’s the way it’s going at the minute. Sometimes it happens, you’ve got to find a way to get a result. Things aren’t going our way for the minute but we have to dig in over the international break.”
Wilson went on to question United’s defending in the second period
Callum added: “You’re always vulnerable when you have just scored but as professionals they shouldn’t be nicking it late on like that. We had enough chances in the game. We are conceding too many goals at the minute. We need to work harder to make sure that stops because it’s disappointing when you score what should be a last-minute winner and then it gets taken away.”
When asked about Jamaal Lascelles’ foul on Armstrong,
Callum Wilson reflected: “Jamaal Lascelles has tried to stop a last-minute goal. We’re all behind him and we stand together as a team.”
And when talking about his first goal at the Gallowgate End in the number 9 shirt,
Callum Wilson said: “It’s nice to wear the number nine shirt and it’s nice to score at the home end. I’m happy with the positives to get on the scoresheet but at the end of the day, we didn’t really get the points.”
