Bryan Gil has admitted he is fully focused on Tottenham at present amid previous speculation regarding a January transfer so he can play regularly elsewhere. Linked with a loan exit this month after Spurs pulled the plug on a summer move with the exciting player initially looking on course to return to Spain, the 21-year-old has made a bright start to 2023 with opportunities coming his way.

Bryan Gil said: “Nothing has changed because I focus on the day to day, not the future. You never know what can happen. I’m focused on the present, on working, and if I get the chance to play I have to capitalise on that. I’m just focused on the present now. Whatever happens, happens. I’m focused on being here and playing here.”

Only getting minutes here and there at the beginning of the season, Gil has come into Antonio Conte’s thinking of late following a strong mid-season break and a number of injuries to Tottenham’s frontline. Always needing consistent football to show everyone what he can do, Gil is hoping his recent run continues and his game improves in the process.

Bryan Gil said: “In the end everyone needs time to adapt. Now is when I’m getting some more minutes and getting the chance to be more of a prominent player. I’ve worked hard for this moment to arrive. I hope I’ll keep getting minutes on the pitch here and that I can keep improving.”

Asked about what Conte has said to him,

Bryan Gil said: “He spoke a bit about the match generally but nothing specific for me. But I’m getting more opportunities now, he is giving me minutes and I have to repay his faith. I have to show he can trust me when I get those chances and show that I can play well.”

Gil has certainly impressed Conte in his cameo appearances and the head coach has likened his player to Man City ace Bernardo Silva.

Bryan Gil said: “I don’t read much of the press but if he said that then, well he’s a fantastic player, one of my favourites and he’s on a different level so I suppose I have to say thanks.”

One thing the player has struggled with since his move to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July 2021 is the physicality of the Premier League. Gil has had to put the work in behind the scenes to improve on that aspect of his game, noting the difficulty and how tough it is to increase his weight and to change physically.

Bryan Gil said: “The physical aspect is something I struggled with in my first year. But I’ve got my head down and worked with the physical coaches and I can notice the difference. I think on the pitch you can see the difference as well. I think there is a big difference [between Premier League and La Liga]. I think in that area I suffered here quite a lot in the first few months and last year. But I just tried to get better every day, it’s not something you can change overnight. It takes time and I think I’m getting there. If you want to change physically you have to change everything, your diet, you have to sleep well and you have to put the time in the gym. But it’s difficult. I’m a slim guy and it’s tough to put on lots of weight but I’m getting there little by little.”
