Leicester City can do no more to convince James Maddison to sign a new contract, manager Brendan Rodgers has said, with their leading star weighing up the next step in his career. In the summer, Maddison will have just one year remaining on his deal at the King Power Stadium, putting City in a predicament. If Maddison does not intend to stay then City will have either have to sell him while his value remains high, or keep him for another year before losing him on a free transfer in 2024. Rodgers admits there is nothing more City can do to show Maddison he is best placed where he is right now. The City boss knows his number 10 wants to play on the biggest stage, and believes he is capable of doing so.

Brendan Rodgers said: “No, (there’s nothing more City can do to convince him). I think he knows how much he’s loved and the impact he’s had here. It’s just going to be about him and where he sees the next steps of his career. That’s nothing against the club or against anyone, he’s probably a player that wants to play at the very highest level and he’s showing he can do that. He’s a top, top player but in the meantime we’re not taking anything away from him, he’s very committed. You see him, he led them out, his chest was out and he absolutely loved it, it was right up his street.”

Maddison’s ninth goal and fifth assist of the season against Spurs means he is up to a combined 14 in 16 Premier League matches this term. Taking away penalties, only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane have more.
