Newcastle had got off to a blistering start to the new campaign. After finishing third in the season before Kevin Keegan’s men thrashed promoted side Leicester in the opening match of the season. They went on to beat Coventry 4-0 and with seven goals in the month and only one conceded, Kevin Keegan won the award. It was his second award in the league after winning it once in the previous season.
