Liverpool skipper and record goalscorer Ian Rush admitted that he thought for a long time that manager Graeme Souness was going to give him the bullet. Rush also confessed that he felt Ronnie Whelan or Steve Nicol would get the captain’s armband ahead of him that season. He added that Souness, who dished out “Silent treatment” to his players earlier, was a changed man.

Ian Rush said “After a game at Southampton he asked me point blank if I could remember the last time I’d had a shot on target. To be honest I couldn’t answer him and a few days later I was dropped. We didn’t speak for almost a month and I thought my time was over.”
