As Aston Villa sat top of the table thanks to their win over Nottingham Forest, all the eyes were set to move to Norwich where Manchester United were the visitors. The 2nd and 3rd placed sides were ready to ensure that they stay in touch with the league leaders Aston Villa. Norwich had the chance to go top of the table with a win whereas a win would take United to just a point off the midlands team.

Mark Robins who left Old Trafford for Norwich in an £800000 move a season earlier – was keen to add to United’s agony and help unfancied Norwich consolidate their own challenge.

Aston Villa manager Ron Atkinson spoke about the match after their clash and said “We can’t do a thing about the outcome, so there is no point worrying about it. The best result would be if they both lost.”
