Brian Clough, the most successful manager in the English game at that point of time sensationally announced that he would quit Nottingham Forest at the end of the season. Clough’s shock decision came in the wake of weekend reports of a drinking problem said to be interfering with his ability to manage at Forest. The official announcement came from Forest chairman Fred Reacher followed by a statement from Brian Clough himself.

Fred Reacher said “During the last few weeks, Brian Clough and I have held talks about his future. We were going to announce it some time this week anyway.”

Brian Clough said “I’ve spent 41 years in the game and by now I am at a stage where I am ought to be able to enjoy my pension. I’ve talked with my family and its never easy to pick the right moment.”

Prior to the dreaded 1992-93 season, Clough had spent 18 years at Nottingham Forest, winning one league title, two European Cup and four Football league cup.
