Aston Villa was keen to bring Nottingham Forest star Roy Keane to the club and the chairman as well as the manager Ron Atkinson was not put off by the £3 million valuations. But they feared that as more and more suiters were coming in for his services, a dutch style auction would blow Villa out of the water in terms of their spending capacity.

Keane had a release clause in his contract that he could activate to leave Forest should Brian Clough’s side went down. And Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal were already interested in the player. Blackburn’s wealthy owner Jack Walker was also ready to splash out big cash for Keane. Even some big Italian clubs and Spanish clubs were interested in the player.
