As Old Trafford was getting ready to welcome the title after 26 years, apparently Alex Ferguson had already started to build a team that would be able to defend their premierleague crown for the next year. Likes of Bryan Robson, Mark Hughes and Dennis Irwin were coming to an end of their careers and he was already short on home grown players for the European competition.

Apparently the Scotsman had lined up two Irishman to arrive at Old Trafford and they were Chelsea skipper Andy Townsend and Forest’s Roy Keane. Ferguson openly admitted that he wanted to bring Townsend to United a summer earlier and Keane, despite his badboy image was still considered one of the brightest talents in the English game.

He was also interested in the unsettled Juventus star David Platt, Sampdoria’s Des Walker and Sheffield Wednesday’s striker David Hirst to the club.
