Middlesbrough 3 – Tottenham Hotspur 0

Middlesbrough manager Lennie Lawrence was still clinging on the slender hope that his men could avoid the drop from the FA premier league after the battling 3-0 win over Tottenham at Ayresome Park. Against a below-par Spurs, two first-half goals by winger Tommy Wright put Middlesbrough in the driving seat and Paul Wilkinson made sure of the points with the third after76 minutes.

Lennie Lawrence said “We are still clinging on to a slender thread. Perhaps the players thought it was all over and they could relax and play without pressure. I believe that we will finish above Oldham and Forest – the question is whether we can catch Sheffield United”
