Roy Wegerle

Manchester City 1 – Coventry City 1 – Late Wegerle Goal denies Manchester City their first win of the season

Horton and Moss saw their new team come within five minutes of sparking their season into life at Maine Road. City was within sight of a desperately needed first win of the season to lift the gloom surrounding the club.

But on 85 minutes, Steve McMahon’s poor pass was intercepted by Roy Wegerle who took full advantage from 15 yards by driving the ball under Tony Coton to keep Coventry’s unbeaten record intact. It had the City fans shaking their heads in disbelief and summed up a week of turmoil for the Maine Road club.

They looked to have clinched three precious points after a superb 34th-minute effort from Mike Sharon.
