Aston Villa suffered no reaction from their midweek excursions into Europe as they became the first side that season to win at Portman road. Villa was the classier team and superior man for man. Ian Marshall, Ipswich’s £750000 signing from Oldham scored in the ninth minute from the rebound after Nigel Spink had blocked his first attempt.

Villa equalized in the 19th minute when Steve Staunton put in a long diagonal cross from the left which was finished by Dean Saunders. And then in the 55th minute Republic of Ireland international and Villa’s latest signing from Chelsea, Andy Townsend grabbed the winner with a scorching left-foot drive from 25 yards that flew into the top corner.
