Roy Keane, Manchester United’ reluctant hero, reckoned that he was lucky to be around to set his side on their way to a flying start in their European cup campaign. The Republic of Ireland midfielder did not like the wide role manager Alex Ferguson gave him but he used the space he was given to good effect as he struck twice in United’s 3-2 win over Honved in Budapest.

Roy Keane said “I played there at Chelsea and I was terrible. I was lucky the boss kept me in after that performance. I like to get up and down the middle but I hate it when I have time on the all. That’s the weakest part of my game.”

Alex Ferguson said “He always threatens when he gets in behind people and he did that all night.”

Steve Bruce said “We are not downhearted, we are disappointed that we didn’t take out chances – on another day it would have been 6-0.”
