Chelsea and Ireland skipper Andy Townsend came to the rescue of his international teammate and Nottingham Forest midfielder Roy Keane. Despite his talents, Keane had been in the news for all the reasons that year and Townsend felt that Keane was getting targeted. He also said that his club manager Brian Clough and the Irish FA should take a page out of Alex Ferguson’s book who manager Ryan Giggs brilliantly.

Andy Townsend said ”The cottonwool treatment that Alex Ferguson gives has a lot of questions but it works for Giggs. Its very hard to criticize it because of its working. United should have done that with George Best and they would have gotten a bit more out of him. Roy is basically a very nice lad and if wants to go out and enjoy himself why shouldn’t he? At the moment, he is the target, a lot of which is irrelevant. I’m sure it will blow over.”
