Alan Kelly was in sparkling form as Sheffield United collected three valuable points in their bid to stay in the premier league. Kelly pulled off some brilliant saves as Adrian Littlejohn killed off bottom club Oldham with a goal 13 minutes from time. Midfielder John Gannon scrambled their first on the stroke of half time but Sheffield almost came unstuck trying to defend the lead.

The match was a scrappy affair, with the pressure on. Littlejohn carved out an early opening when he ran on to Charlie Hartfield’s through ball to outpace Steve Redmond but dragged a low shot wide. Oldham was bottom off the table with the result and life in the championship was starting to become a reality for the Manchester-based outfit.
