Sheffield United was ready to sign Newcastle United winger Franz Carr on a £200000 transfer. Carr was on loan to Bramall Lane outfit until the end of the season. But Blades boss Dave Bassett had said that he was making the move permanent as Carr had the potential to become a top player.

Carr had played six matches for Sheffield United since he joined on loan and scored two goals. Bassett had to put all the transfer on hold because of a dispute about the ownership of the club. But that was expected to be sorted out and he wanted to make Carr his first permanent signing post that.
