In what was a body blow for Blackburn Rovers their star striker and English transfer record holder Alan Shearer was ruled out of action for the rest of the season after undergoing an operation to rebuild cruciate knee ligament damage. The £3.6 million strikers from Southampton had scored 16 goals in the first 21 games of the season and it looked that he would fire Kenny Dalglish’s side to the title. But he suffered a right anterior crucial ligament damage in a match against Leeds United in December 1992 and has been out of action since.

His side had lost four out of the six matches since then and had only picked up four points. They were not only out of the title race due to that but also seemed to be out of the race for the European spots.
