Kevin Keegan had warned his Newcastle players before the match that wayward Matt Le Tissier was the danger man for his side and he scored two magical goals to wins the game a Southampton side comprehensively outclassed by United.

There was no greater indictment of manager Ian Branfoot, who was subjected to a fans’ protest despite the result than the fact he had chosen to keep Le Tissier out of the team for the previous five matches.

Andy Cole missed a hatful of chances before heading home a fine 72nd-minute equaliser but despite all the dominance, Le Tissier struck six minutes from time for the Saints to score a wonderful solo effort.
