Lee Sharpe returned to Highbury with Manchester United after a whirlwind two years of extreme highs and lows
Lee Sharpe was set for a return to the scene of former glory at Highbury that weekend, with his Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson tipping him to emerge from a nightmare and play a major part in reviving the club’s premier league title dream. The 21-year-old grabbed a hat trick for Arsenal against United two years earlier. But since then his career had been blighted by nagging injury and frightening illness. He was diagnosed with a condition of viral meningitis. Ferguson said “Sharpe is a worker and a provider who can give us the crosses we’ve badly needed for the strikers. It is great to have him back and I believe you can already see the difference he makes to our attacking form.”

Coventry City had to keep their backroom staff without an official contract due to ongoing cases & compensation payments to ex-manager Terry Butcher and his assistants
Bobby Gould and his backroom were working without contracts to help cash-strapped Coventry City through their financial worries. The club announced yes that it made a £1.4 million trading loss in the year ended last May and it owes the bank £2.2 million in loan and overdraft. Their previous manager Terry Butcher was dismissed earlier that year and had taken out a High Court writ for the remaining two years of his contract an estimated £500000. Mick Mills and Brian Eastick, the assistant coaches had sued the club as well and had taken a settlement out of court.

Oldham Atheltic’s goalkeeper merry-go-round ended with league two goalkeeper Bobby Gould’s return to the club
Oldham Athletic had recalled John Keeley, from a loan spell at Second Divison Chester, to solve their goalkeeping crisis. Keeley was set to face Middlesborough at Boundary Park on Saturday which was going to be his second league game for the club in more than two years. Royle, lost his first choice keeper Jon Hallworth with a wrist ligament injury and then was linked to a £500000 bid for Liverpool’s Bruce Grobbelaar but he also injured an elbow and faced the prospect of minor surgery.

Arsenal Manager Graham George battling on multiple injury fronts as his side hoped to put their title challenge back on track.
Arsenal manager George Graham hoped that his keeper David Seaman and midfielder David Hillier would both return after being substituted during the loss against Leeds United. Apart from the two players in question, striker Alan Smith was out for up to a month with a stress fracture of the ankle. Arsenal had been on a winning run prior to the shock defeat against Leeds and was looking to get their title challenge back on track with a strong performance against Manchester United.
