The inaugural premier league champions were set to pocket a minimum of £770000 financial bonus, a figure that was almost eight times higher then £100000 pocketed by Leeds United for winning the title a year earlier. The BSkyB television deal of £304 million kicked in from that season which meant that nearly £9 million of the sum was to be handed out to the clubs at the end of the first season. When the money for facility fees for staging televised matches and other bonus is added, the total amount for the champions was likely to cross £1 million marks.
