Liverpool legend John Aldridge Questioned Manchester United’s move to get Eric Cantona tipping it to end in tears for both parties
Ex Liverpool legend John Aldridge thought that the signing of controversial star Eric Cantona was a sign of frustration and flapping on the part of Alex Ferguson and wondered if it was likely to end in tears for the Manchester club. He also questioned Ferguson and United’s decision making to put in a bid of over £3.5 million for David Hirst, a figure that could have got them, Alan Shearer, a year earlier but when they didn’t put the money on the table and the striker moved to Blackburn Rovers. He said “If United have the resources to make an offer for Hirst, they should make a concerted move for the best man around at the time, Alan Shearer. I’ll be surprised if Cantona has the same kind of impact.”
Aldridge thought Mark Hughes and Dion Dublin getting fit again would be an issue to accommodate Cantona in the team and the move did not likely go down well with the fans.

Leeds veteran Gordon Strachan Warned Chelsea that Leeds’ Title Challange was not yet over ahead of their clash at Stamford Bridge
Gordon Strachan was going into their visit to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea with a warning to their London opponents: Leeds have a new spring in their step. The 3-0 thrashing of championship pretenders Arsenal last weekend had convinced Howard Wilkinson’s men that they could yet pull the title defence out of the fire –even without Eric Cantona. Strachan said “People were writing us off even last week. It is important to not become bitter. We had a lot of disappointments to cope with and things would have gone sour if we had not reacted in the right way. But the Arsenal result has put a spring back into our step. Now the aim is to notch up our first away win at Chelsea.”

Middlesborough’s new signing Craig Hignett was ready to step up to the premier league & was hopeful for debut against Oldham
£50000 midfield signing Craig Hignett was set for a debut later that day for Middlesborough against Oldham Athletic. The manager Lennie Lawrence was reluctant to throw the new player in the mix but the former Crewe Alexandra skipper was certain that he would be able to cope with the rigours of the premier league “I wouldn’t have come to Borough if I didn’t think I was good enough. Boro plays football and that’s the way I like it. If the gaffer gives me a chance today than I am ready for it.” The chances of the 22-year-old starting increased after John Hendrie had dropped out with a recurrence of his calf strain.

England Manager Graham Taylor felt televised matches were creating ghost matches and saturation for fans
England manager and Former Aston Villa Boss Graham Taylor felt that so many televised games could lead to saturation of the coverage and produce ghost games. He said “Sometimes I look at all the videotapes that have piled up while I’m out of the country and just can’t face them all. There is no such thing as the weekend now, the matches are on Sundays and then it’s on Mondays, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturdays. You wonder where it will all end.” Very much a traditionalist, Taylor regretted the passing of the old fashioned football on Saturday afternoon.
