Chelsea striker Mick Harford faced suspension after picking up another booking during Blues’ win on Saturday against Everton. But he was set to be available to face champions Leeds that weekend. He was hoping to add to his 10 goal tally of that season against a suspect Leeds defence, Chelsea manager Ian Porterfield was set to name an unchanged squad for the televised clash, with Erland Johnsen likely to be given a place on the bench as cover for centre back Frank Sinclair.

Bruce Grobbelaar was not going to Oldham, just yet. That was according to Liverpool boss Graeme Souness and his Latics’ counterpart, Joe Royle, who joined forces to shoot down stories that the Zimbabwean was destined for Boundary Park. Both managers stressed that there had been no contact between the clubs as Oldham, stapped for cash, awaited FA Permission to sign another top-flight keeper on loan as a replacement for the injured Jon Hallworth. Grobbelaar’s international commitments to the African Cup of Nations as well as a potentially minor surgery was also a factor that may dissuade Oldham against signing him.

Everton could turn to speed to life their depression after previous week’s defeat by Chelsea. Manager Howard Kendall was impressed by the form of Stuart Barlow and Robert Warycha in the 7-0 reserve thrashing of Bradford City. And they were in contention for a starting place for that weekend’s trip to Ipswich. Both players, who had hit the target without figuring for the full 0- minutes looked set to be offered greater than subs’ roles.

John Barnes had been guaranteed a place in Liverpool’s starting line up at home to Crystal Palace on Saturday after his match-winning return as a substitute in the last match. Barnes, had replaced Ian Rush after only 17 minutes against QPR and set up Ronny Rosenthal’s late winner, was now set to make his first full appearance since the Achilles tendon injury that ruled him out of the European Championships previous summer. Manager Graeme Souness said, “Its only games which will get John fit again, so he will start against Palace.”
