  • Roberto De Zerbi says he made Joao Pedro ‘mistake’ after loss against Arsenal

The Brazil international started on the bench in the 3-0 defeat by Arsenal. De Zerbi put that down to his decision to leave him on for the full game at Brentford after a two-month absence forced by injury. Albion had just gone 2-0 down when he was sent on as a substitute along with Facundo Buonanotte. De Zerbi said: “I made a mistake at Brentford because Joao Pedro couldn’t play in the first XI (on Saturday) because I kept him on the pitch for 90 minutes. “In my head before the Brentford game was to change him after 65 minutes. “But to try to win the game and on the bench there wasn’t another striker, I made a mistake.” Albion have a clear week to plan for their trip to Turf Moor. De Zerbi said: “When we prepare the game with the right time and not every three days we are a completely different team.”

  • Burnley boss Vincent Kompany’s verdict on Everton defeat

The only goal came on the stroke of half time when Aro Muric’s clearance was charged down by Dominic Calvert-Lewis and deflected into the net. Dara O’Shea was sent off in the second half after bringing down Dwight McNeil just over the halfway line. “The letter of the law says he should have been denying a goalscoring opportunity to be sent off and I’ll let you guys make your judgement on that,” said Kompany. “There was a lot of force on the ball and it would be a comfortable pick up for the goalkeeper.” The result leaves the Clarets six points from safety, but Kompany refused to pin the blame on his goalkeeper. “He has to keep going. It is part of being a professional footballer. We all live with the mistakes we make, it happens for everyone in life and in football it is no different,” he added. “Our momentum collapsed twice through moments of our own doing. But I can’t for one second criticise the effort of the team and the idea to come here and play like this.”

  • Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke on new contract with the club #BHAFC

The Dutch defender stood out at Arsenal, days after signing a new contract with Albion. He has impressed Roberto De Zerbi with his progress and confidence and has become a firm fans’ favourite. Van Hecke told the Argus: “I just try to play every game at my best and tell myself that I need to be better than my last game. “I step on the pitch with a lot of confidence. “I think that’s good but not too much and also be eager to become a better player.” Albion complete a hectic period by tackling Palace at Selhurst Park on Thursday. It feels like the sort of ultra-competitive occasion which would be right up the 22-year-old’s street. Van Hecke said: “I haven’t thought too much about it but now we focus on that one. “We know how important it is for the club, for the fans, for the players. “I am really looking forward to it and hopefully we can go there for the win.” Van Hecke and Albion will hope to have more of the game than in the 2-0 defeat at the Emirates. He said: “I suppose you look first to yourself but then you also need to look to our opponent and they were really strong. “It’s a top team, maybe one of the best in the world. “I think at times we played some football how we usually do but a lot of times they had us under pressure and they played some good football. “It was a difficult game but in the first half we defended our goal really well so we had good hopes for the second half. “In the first five minutes we had some control but then they scored out of a corner and then a late goal. “We can also score 1-1 with Pascal. “It would not have been deserved but at our place we sometimes draw or lose games and it is also not deserved.”

  • Adam Smith reveals AFC Bournemouth ‘totally different’ under Andoni Iraola #AFCB

The club made a bold move in the summer to replace Gary O’Neil with the sought-after Iraola, when his contract expired at Rayo Vallecano. Iraola, a former Spain international, spent most of his playing career in Bilbao with Athletic Club, where he made over 500 appearances. Smith recently passed the 350-game milestone at Cherries, with Iraola the seventh different boss he has played under at Dean Court. During his loan spell in 2010-11, the Tottenham Hotspur youngster played for Eddie Howe and then Lee Bradbury. Smith then signed from Spurs permanently in 2014, again under Howe, before going on to feature regularly for Jason Tindall, Jonathan Woodgate, Scott Parker and O’Neil. The 32-year-old has recently enjoyed a run back in the starting XI under Iraola, impressing at right-back having played second fiddle to new signing Max Aarons for much of the campaign. Asked how different things have been on a day-to-day basis since Iraola’s arrival, Cherries’ first ever overseas boss, Smith told the Daily Echo: “Yes, it probably is (completely different). “We are in most days, so there are less days off. Training is still intense but not as hard, but we train mostly every day. “Everything is totally different, so I think that is why I think it took us a bit of time to adapt.” Asked what his initial reaction was when he heard Iraola was being hired to replace O’Neil over the summer, Smith recalled: “It was just a big shock, to be honest, as I’m sure it was for everyone else. “But I read up on him. He played under (Marcelo) Bielsa and it looks like he had a great career as well. “I was definitely excited for him to come in and to work with him.” Iraola spent most of his playing career featuring at right-back, the same position as Smith, before retiring in 2016. “It is good that he has a better understanding of what me and Maxy go through, him playing as a full-back,” said Smith. “He can definitely help us with certain aspects of the game.” Smith has now featured in eight Premier League seasons, having debuted in the competition for Spurs in 2012. In Cherries’ first top-flight campaigns, Smith nailed down his starting spot, rarely missing a fixture, unless injured on suspended. Last season the defender played in 37 of Cherries’ 38 Premier League matches, with his tally in the competition now approaching 200. Discussing the differences he has noticed over the years, Smith said: “Back in the day, you felt like the top five teams had wingers who were dangerous, but now it is every team in the whole league. “The left winger is probably always their best player, if I’m honest! “For me and Maxy it is really tough, with some of the wingers we come up against. “It’s what the Premier League is now, with scouting all over the world, they are bringing the best players here. It is going to be tough every game.” Smith will hope to keep his place when Cherries go to Nottingham Forest on Saturday (3pm).

  • Roberto De Zerbi prepares Brighton to face Marseille after heavy Aston Villa defeat #BHAFC

Roberto De Zerbi is lifting his squad following a 6-1 defeat and ahead of Thursday’s Europa League clash at Marseille. Albion have time to prepare before flying to the south of France on Wednesday. But there is plenty to do after they were torn apart by, principally, an Ollie Watkins treble. Head coach De Zerbi expects to see “the true Brighton” in France and said of the Villa game: “It may be one of the most important days of our lives and our time in Brighton because the level is changing. “We wanted to reach this level and now we can play, we can compete for the history of our club, for the history of ourself. “We are playing for different things than our football. “If everyone thinks like this, you can find the mental energy to play.” De Zerbi took off Danny Welbeck, Evan Ferguson and Pervis Estupinan at half-time but not with thoughts on Marseille. He said: “In my head, there was only Aston Villa. I wanted to change something in that part of the pitch because I thought to change the game.”

  • AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola on reunion with Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta #AFCB

Arteta’s Arsenal ended up comfortable 4-0 winners at Vitality Stadium, following goals from Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, and Ben White. A lot of the build-up to the fixture in the national press and on social media focused on Iraola and Arteta’s shared footballing past, the pair playing in the same Antiguoko team in their native Basque country. Aside from a single game together for Spain’s under-21s, it was the last time the pair crossed paths, prior to this summer’s meeting of all Premier League managers. Asked about the reunion following the game, Iraola responded: “Once the game starts, you forgot about these things. “You focus on the sporting side. I congratulated him and I will just talk to him right now as soon as I finish. “But during the game at the end, you forget about these things and then you can complete it.” Aston Villa manager Unai Emery is also from the Basque province of Gipuzkoa, as well as ex-Wolves manager Julien Lopetegui, who left the Premier League this summer.

  • Hatters duo declared fit for Burnley as Hatters boss Rob Edwards vows to manage injuries #LutonTownFC

Watch more of our videos on Shots!and live on Freeview channel 276Visit Shots! nowHatters boss Rob Edwards has been given a selection boost ahead of tomorrow night’s Premier League clash at home to Burnley with both Tom Lockyer and Reece Burke having been declared fit.The pair started Saturday’s 2-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park, following the half time whistle, Burke didn’t reappear for the second period, replaced by Danish centre half Mads Andersen. Then with 10 minutes gone of the second period, Lockyer was also forced off having taken a blow to the face before the break, his eye starting to swell up fairly badly, Teden Mengi on for his Premier League debut.Tom Lockyer goes off injured against Everton on Saturday - pic: Lewis Storey/Getty ImagesDespite the much-changed back-line, Luton still managed to secure their first three points of the season, but ahead of a home match with a winless Clarets on Tuesday night, there is every chance both will feature, as Edwards said “We’re okay, we had a couple of knocks and made two changes, were forced into a couple of changes at the weekend."Both Burkey and Locks have come through today so that’s good news for us."They’ll be okay, no fresh injury worries from the weekend, so the squad will be the squad that it was from Saturday.”Burke’s stint at Luton has been blighted by injury at times, as in his first two years, he has never begun more than six league games in a row.Saturday was his fifth successive start in the top flight this term, as Edwards knows keeping him fit will be a huge shot in the arm for the Hatters’ chances of staying up, continuing: “His groin was sore, he’s seen a few people over the last couple of days, so he’s all right."It’s just that groin area, but he’s seen someone this morning and got the all-clear, it’s just going to be a little bit sore."He trained today, no problem, so that was a big plus.“He’s been excellent, he’s a really good player and an important player for us as well.”Monitoring the former West Ham United and Hull City centre back will now be key to ensure his body can withstand a full campaign in the Premier League, with Edwards adding: “We don’t want to lose him for a period of time, so it’s just something we’re going to have to manage over the next week or so, get through to the international break and then we can get a little bit of work into him."What he does, he puts every ounce of it into everything, every day."Sometimes you want to say ‘Burkey, just be steady, slow down, just chill out a little bit and manage yourself.’"But I’d rather be doing that and rein people in than kick them up the backside and get them to work hard."He’s just a really good pro and he’s an important player for us.”

  • Luton skipper elated to achieve the accolade of becoming a Premier League goalscorer #LutonTownFC

Watch more of our videos on Shots!and live on Freeview channel 276Visit Shots! nowHatters skipper Tom Lockyer was understandably elated to earn an accolade he never thought was possible, becoming a Premier League goalscorer when netting Town's opener in their 2-1 win at Everton on Saturday. The 28-year-old hasn’t been known for his scoring record during the majority of his career, far from it in fact, with 15 goals in 435 club matches. He managed just seven in seven years at Bristol Rovers, on target in the Conference, League Two, League One and the Checkatrade Trophy, before notching once for Charlton in his 43 Championship outings for the Addicks.Signing for Luton in September 2020, the Wales international again had to wait a while to wheel away in celebration, on target in a 2-1 success over Bristol City in January 2022.Last term, Lockyer opened his account in a 3-2 Carabao Cup defeat to Newport County, also scoring in the 1-1 draw at Coventry in the league. He then finished the campaign with the most prolific run of his career to date, with three goals in his last five starts, although the fifth saw him replaced inside 10 minutes after collapsing on the pitch during the play-off final at Wembley.Thankfully making a full recovery, Lockyer started his fifth top flight match for Luton at Goodison Park on Saturday, putting a glorious chance over the bar when meeting Alfie Doughty’s corner, but there was no stopping him on 24 minutes.Tom Lockyer's disappointment at missing this header didn't last too long as he opened the scoring at Goodison Park on Saturday - pic: Lewis Storey/Getty ImagesAnother Doughty delivery saw Carlton Morris’s header rebound off the bar, with the centre half showing fantastic determination to slide in and deflect Ashley Young’s clearance into the net to put the Hatters in front for the first time this season.Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “Being a Premier League goalscorer is something you dream of and you don't think will ever happen, but what an accolade."It's special but it's a team game and a first Premier League win brings a buzz in the changing rooms."We'll enjoy it and you just hope it gives everyone a taste and they want more now.”Team-mate Morris was quick to praise his close friend as well, saying: “No matter which box he’s in he just can’t help blocking and tackling it into the net, so he’s doing it in the right way!”With most pundits writing the Hatters’ chance of staying up off before a ball was even kicked this year, Lockyer, who had to go off early in the second half due to an eye injury, was thrilled to show them that Town mean business in their attempts to remain a top flight club.He added: “There’s a lot of people been saying a lot of things, so it’s nice to try and silence them a little bit and get the first win on the board."It feels really good but we need to try and back that up as well, we want to try and push on as well.”

  • #PLStories- Gary O’Neil accepts red card but bizarrely claims Wolves deserved to beat the Hatters instead of draw #WOLVESFC

Watch more of our videos on Shots!and live on Freeview channel 276Visit Shots! nowWolverhampton Wanderers boss Gary O’Neil bizarrely claimed that he felt his side deserved to emerge triumphant from their 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road yesterday. The visitors were on the back foot for almost all of the first half in which they were reduced to 10 men following Jean-Ricner Bellegarde’s red card, as Luton dominated proceedings, going closest when Carlton Morris’s 20-yard rasping drive smacked against the post.Town then fell behind early in the second period, Neto breaking away to score a fine individual goal, as home stopper Thomas Kaminski made an important double save, but following that the Luton keeper wasn’t unduly tested.Referee Josh Smith sends off Wolves defender Jean-Ricner Bellegarde - pic: Liam SmithHatters drew level through a disputed penalty midway through the second half and almost won it, Chiedozie Ogbene flagged offside when tapping home from close range. The stats showed Town had the upper hand throughout, with 20 shots, three on target as opposed to three from the visitors, all of them on target.Hatters also won 10 corners to one from Wolves, having 55 percent of possession, but despite that, O’Neil said: “I’m extremely disappointed with the first 20, 25 minutes, but we knew today would be a test of mentality and being ready to go."Luton were aggressive, went man for man and we lost every duel."Every time it went into our forward players, it bounced off them, every time it went into theirs, it stuck."When it dropped into midfield they were faster to it, so I’m extremely disappointed with the first 20, 25 minutes, so much so that we had to change shape and try and get a foothold, which I thought we did."We saw off that terrible spell and managed to make the game slightly more even."We suffer a crazy moment from Jean and from that moment it’s going to be a tough hour or so."I asked a big question from the players at half time and they managed to produce second half to be fair."To come from the first 20 minutes, and lose a man, to respond the way they did and fight the way they did to the very end and deserve to win the game was a big effort from them.”One thing O’Neil didn’t really have any complaints with was the decision to send off Bellegarde late in the first period, the French defender dismissed for kicking out at Luton skipper Tom Lockyer. The former Bournemouth manager added: “I only saw it back on the iPad when they were doing the check."It looked like there was a coming together and it looked like a kick out a little bit."I’ll watch it back to have a clearer look at it but if he has kicked out I can understand the red card."Jean is very disappointed about it, he apologised to the group, apologised to me, it’s just something we can’t have."I spoke a lot about trying to fix some of the craziness within the group and that’s an extreme version of it."You can’t be successful in football matches if someone does that."The fact we leave with a point after that, is one hell of an effort from everyone, but more often than not it someone does something like you’re going to walk away with no points, which we can’t afford to do.”

  • #PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi feels lucky after worst performance yet winning against Bournemouth 3-1 #BHAFC

The win sees Albion move up to third in the Premier League following an emphatic brace by super-sub Kaoru Mitoma. De Zerbi said: “Today we played one of the worst games of my time (here). Two, three or four times we were lucky. Bournemouth were great in the first half. "We were better in the second half, but still not at our best level. "When you play with the young or new players, they need time to understand the new ideas on the pitch. “We won with character, passion, behaviour and not with the style of play. It's a very important part, maybe the most important. De Zerbi also highlighted the significance of Mitoma to the team and emphasised the need for him to be rested to ensure his performances remain consistent, crediting Albion owner Tony Bloom in the process for retaining the Japanese winger’s services for the season. “The credit is to Tony Bloom, not me. I think Mitoma is one of the most important players but sometimes he needs to stay on the bench to rest, to play better the next game.”

  • #PLStories- AFC Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola on goal against Brighton and positive performance despite loss #AFCB

Dominic Solanke lofted the ball into an empty net after Ryan Christie had pickpocketed goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen, but Cherries were unable to hold on, Milos Kerkez’s own goal levelling scores before the break. Karou Mitoma came off the bench to score twice and turn the game around in the hosts’ favour. Verbruggen saw a lot of the ball in the first period, being tasked with building moves for Brighton. The goalie was allowed to dwell on the ball, but Christie picked the right moment to tackle the Dutchman and set up Solanke for the opener. Cherries anticipated this, according to Iraola, who told the Daily Echo: “We knew when you come here they are going to try and build up. “We have a lot of decisions to make. “We decided to go man-to-man, taking risks and the only free man was the keeper. “We had to decide very well the moment where you have to run to the keeper, otherwise they find the spare man very easily and they are out. “I think we did really well, not only on this play, but overall during the game. We lost because of other reasons.” It took Brighton just 15 seconds to take the lead in the second half, leaving a shellshocked Cherries struggling to find a response. “I think we had the chances, especially with Antoine, the two chances he had for us,” continued Iraola. “He was very good from the bench. “Also the one that they cleared from the line and we had some chances there. “But it was much more difficult, because when they don’t have the need to attack you, they can play with the ball, they can attract you and it is much more difficult to play against Brighton once they are winning. “For me the key is having the first half where we were winning, you have to make more damage.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola frustrated by officiating in Brighton loss and lack of penalties #AFCB

Cherries’ wait for a spot-kick long precedes Iraola’s time at the club, failing to be given a penalty in the entirety of last season. Iraola’s men had a few shouts to referee John Brooks for a penalty during their 3-1 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion. Dominic Solanke went down under a challenge of Pervis Estupinan early on, before Simon Adingra’s hand connected with the face of Marcus Tavernier, also in the first half. On the flip side, both Liverpool and Swansea City have been awarded penalties against Cherries earlier this campaign, the one at Anfield particularly contentious when Dominik Szoboszlai went down under Joe Rothwell’s tackle. “I don’t know what has to happen to be given a penalty,” Iraola told the Daily Echo, after the loss at Brighton. “A slap in the face, clearly. There are people watching on TV and then we concede a penalty, I remember the one at Anfield, a light touch.” Iraola and coach Pablo de la Torre were often seen discussing decisions with fourth official Peter Bankes during the contest, who was in consultation with video assistant Michael Oliver. “We were winning 1-0 and they are key decisions that are very important,” said Iraola. “There was a check they did on Dom after five minutes, a possible penalty. I think it is a push. “But they say it has to be something else for a penalty. But you see the one we conceded at Liverpool. “It is difficult, but I understand this one because it is a push, but it is not enough for a penalty. “But not the second one. The second one he (Adingra) just slaps the face of Tavernier without any reason. “Maybe he lost his mind for one second, but sometimes red cards are like this. “It just costs one second. Now it is probably not the referees, but the ones watching. “I think that if you don’t concede this penalty, you are free in the box to slap players. “This cannot happen. It is not like there is a reason why. I think it is pretty obvious.” Cherries have slipped to 17th in the Premier League table over the weekend, with no wins from their opening six matches. They turn their attentions to the Carabao Cup in midweek, when Championship Stoke City come to Vitality Stadium.

Paul Heckingbottom has been looking ahead to Sunday’s Premier League showdown with Newcastle…

  • #PLStories – Burnley boss Vincent Kompany on upcoming Manchester United test #BurnleyFC

United lost 4-3 to Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Wednesday night to continue an early-season slump which has already seen them lose three of their opening five Premier League fixtures. With off-field issues also mounting for Ten Hag, the pressure will be on United to deliver a result at Turf Moor, but Kompany is interested only in his own players. “I only try and assess (United) in a way that I need to do for my team, their strengths and weaknesses,” he said. “I’ve been in a big club before and I know what it is when you lose a couple of games. Pressure can mount but it’s not for me to talk about them. I focus on the pitch… “We’re not busy with what is happening at the other team, that doesn’t concern us. I have to myself manage the results of our team and the performances. “I think we’re a calm camp, we’re at a place where we feel there is something really exciting ahead of us and we want to build on that moment. Everything that happens elsewhere is not our concern.” Kompany is looking to build on the positive signs shown in Monday’s 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest, Burnley’s first point of the season and one that could have been all three but for a contentious VAR decision that ruled out Lyle Foster’s late strike for a handball by Sander Berge. After three consecutive home defeats to Manchester City, Aston Villa and Tottenham, the draw was a welcome step forward. “We’ve had three games against three of the top eight sides in the league and the gap has always been there,” Kompany said. “Against Forest we felt we were on an even playing field. Now it’s up to us to close the gap to the teams at the top. “I’m really looking forward to this game to see if we’ve made those steps forward. I really believe in the attacking threat in our team in terms of being able to create something and I hope that shows on Saturday.” Although Burnley’s first season back in the top flight began with three straight home games – a situation caused by the postponement of their trip to Luton in August – they were thrown in at the deep end, with the reigning champions first to visit before Villa and Spurs. Even given United’s troubles, Saturday’s 8pm kick-off appears no easier, and Kompany knows his side need to deliver more consistency over the course of a full match. “I really want (Turf Moor) to become a difficult place for any team to come,” he said. “At this moment in time when we have played against teams of the calibre of United it’s fair to say we haven’t been able to put in a 100-minute performance. “We’ve always had a threat, good spells, but we’ve got punished in spells when we weren’t at our best. “For us it’s looking at this game and saying, ‘Can we step it up and get a result against one of the best teams in the league?’. Burnley will need to do that without Foster, who has scored two of their four Premier League goals so far this season. The South African saw red late on at the City Ground on Monday and starts a three-game suspension. “We’ve built a decent squad and there’s a few players I’d like to see anyway,” Kompany said. “It’s for someone else now to step into those shoes, give it their own flavour and hopefully it pays off on the day.”

The Albion midfielder saw his rasping shot against Newcastle end up in a finish for hat-trick man Evan Ferguson after it was fumbled by Nick Pope. He is currently with the Scotland squad as they prepare to face England in a friendly on Tuesday. Gilmour has impressed for the Seagulls early in the season but would love to add a goal or two to his game. Speaking on media duty with the national squad, Gilmour said: “It’s coming! “Two weeks ago against West Ham I came off the pitch and my dad said, ‘How many times? Do you want to just take a chance and shoot!’ “So, going into the game against Newcastle, the first time the ball was bouncing I checked back and thought ‘I just need to shoot here’. It ended up in as an assist. “Hopefully it will come soon. The most important bit is just trying to get a result and trying to help the team, for sure. “It used to be my trademark when I was growing up, edge of the box, hitting it first time, and it would go in. “But then I’ve been first team and I’ve just never scored a goal. Hopefully I can change that.” While Gilmour's dad had reservations, Albion boss Roberto De Zerbi has been pleased with the player's efforts. He maintained his recent good form by helping Scotland to a comfortable 3-0 win in Cyprus on Friday as they edge close to qualification for Euro 2024.

But it is the Irish teen’s willingness to work in that respect which has impressed his senior team-mate as well as the goals. Ferguson fired in a hat-trick against Toon to secure a 3-1 win. There was as much focus on the defending he faced as there was on his finishing. Newcastle didn’t get close for the first two goals. They got a bit nearer for the third and it resulted in a deflection to wrongfoot Nick Pope. But Milner saw something else in that regard which impressed him as he watched from the substitutes’ bench. The former Liverpool man said: “It was pleasing to put in a performance like that, although there are still things to work on. “Evan set the tempo early on. He closed down and blocked a ball going forward. “That might seem a minor thing looking at the game overall, but it sets a tempo. “It shows his intent without the ball. And anyone who knows him so far in his young career, he is an unbelievable finisher. “He is a goalscorer. And when he is doing the ugly side of the game too and being the first line of defence, he was outstanding. “He is still so young but what a player for us and the ceiling is very high for him.” Ferguson snapped up a rebound for his first, then curled home from outside the box before seeing this third ricochet in of Fabian Schar. Milner said: “The first one – that was the sign of a goalscorer. “That natural movement in the box, sniffing it out the chances in the box, being on the move expecting a slip. “He scores all types of goals and it’s up to us to keep his feet on the ground and keep driving him and keep pushing him. “The manager is on him hard as well, because he knows how good he can be and wants him to improve. “He is a great lad with a great attitude and he can only get better. “For the second one, they almost offered him a chance to put it in the corner – and he did! “The more he scores like that, he might get closed down a bit quicker. “But it was a great and clam finish, and another finish of a goalscorer.” Around the interview area on Saturday evening, anyone from the Albion side who put himself forward for questions was being asked the same thing. Who does Ferguson remind you of? Who would you compare him to? Roberto De Zerbi saw some likenesses to Christin Vieri. Pascal Gross was not willing to offer a comparison. Milner has been around far too long to be tempted into mentioning any names as he spoke about an 18-year-old still some way short of the first anniversary of his first Prem goal. He said: “I don’t really want to compare him to anyone because as soon as I do that it puts pressure on him. “I want to make sure his head doesn’t get too big! “But he’s a top talent and has started his career fantastically well. “Hopefully he has a long one ahead doing the same thing. “When you compare him to other players, that puts more pressure on him than we need to at this moment. “He is at a fantastic place right now with great players around him, a great bunch of lads that will push and support him, and a manager that wants him to prove all aspects of his game.” Amid the exciting group of young players, De Zerbi has also assembled a lot of experience. And experience of good things. Success. Doing things the right way. Milner said: “When I was a young player (at Leeds United) it was the likes of David Batty and Dom Matteo that kept my feet on the ground. “Very old school, probably more than now although I still have a bit of that old school in me. “There are no tea cups being thrown around now. “But now it is our job to push Evan and advise him. “He will have ups and downs.” Ferguson has already had his hiccups. A costly missed penalty for Republic of Ireland under-21s, a couple of injuries. Those injuries were, thankfully, not as bad as they first looked although the second, sustained at Chelsea, denied him a Wembley outing in the FA Cup semi-final. He appears to have taken those setbacks in a mature way and come back strongly. The glimpses we see on social media of him trading mickey-takes with Lewis Dunk suggest someone who is confident and comfortable in his surroundings. Milner likes what he sees from the set-up in general. He said: “I am learning a great deal from the manager. “It’s great to be here, a great bunch of lads and the manager has such a passion for the game. “He pushes you every day and wants maximum effort and concentration and attention to detail. “That is massive and I am really enjoying it. I was excited to come here and you never stop learning, off players, the manager and coaching staff. “It is a lot different from what I did for a long time under Jurgen Klopp and I am enjoying it immensely. “It is exactly what I hoped for in this later stage of my career, to keep learning and improving and seeing different ways of playing.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola reveals loan move of Jaidon Anthony to Leeds United was not controlled by him #AFCB

Anthony had featured regularly under new boss Iraola, starting three of the first four games this season. However, after Cherries moved late to sign winger Luis Sinisterra on loan, Anthony was suddenly deemed surplus to requirements, shipped out to Leeds United in the Championship for the rest of the season. Iraola explained earlier in the summer how he has little to do with transfer dealings, leaving that to the likes of Richard Hughes and Neill Blake. Asked how much of a say he had in the shock Sinisterra and Anthony swap deal, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “It is a situation that happened on the last day of the window. “The club thought that we could be stronger adding a player like Luis Sinisterra. “He was on Saturday (at Brentford) watching the game. Now he is going with the national team, so we will not have him for the next 10 to 12 days. “But it is another player we have who can make the difference, starting from wide. It is a good addition for us.” Quizzed on if he supported the idea of Anthony going to Leeds, Iraola added: “It is a decision he had to make. “I tried to help him as much as I could, because Jaidon, I love him as a person and as a player. “Of the four games he has been with me, he has started three. He was very good in pre-season. “But he had to take the decision, because we have a lot of options there out wide. “It is the decision he finally took and I hope the best, because he deserves it. “I know he is going to play very well there in Leeds and I hope he returns next season even better as a player.” Luis Sinisterra joined Cherries on deadline day (Image: PA) Anthony was with Cherries’ squad in the team hotel, getting ready to face Brentford in the Premier League the following day, before his sudden departure. Detailing his conversations with the 23-year-old, Iraola said: “I tried to be as honest as I could, because he deserves it. “I had no problem if he was to stay here, no problem at all. “And you can see because he has played with me, he has started. He is a reliable player. “You tell him to do this, he will do it or he will try to do it. He will make mistakes, like everyone else, but he is a very reliable player. “He had to take the decision knowing the players he will be fighting for in his position. “The option he had also I think was really good, to a very good team. “He decided to take that route. It’s a loan, so I hope he comes back with us, for sure he will, like a better player. “As a person, he is a top, top guy. I think he deserved all the honesty, as much as I could. “I tried to help him, but he was the one with the final decision.”

And he revealed how the second goal was a case of planning paying off. De Zerbi saw his side bounce back from a defeat by West Ham to enjoy a 3-1 win at the Amex. The Seagulls boss said: “I am happy for the reaction after the defeat to West Ham because we didn’t deserve to lose that game. “We didn’t play a great game against West Ham but I think it was enough to win. We were unlucky. "Today we played one of the best games in my time because we have to consider the opponent and the opponent is one of the best in the Premier League. Incredibly physical. “I am very happy.” De Zerbi revealed the part played by Billy Gilmour on the second goal resulted from careful planning and hard work during the week. He said: “We are working a lot. We are having a lot of meetings to speak about the details on the pitch. “The second goal was fantastic because we worked on that situation. “When the ball is with the centre-back, he has to find the right position, the right body shape, the player between the lines has to move in the right way, they have to keep the right position. “It’s fantastic when you can see your work and the improvement of the players during the game.”

  • #PLStories- Thomas Frank praised Brentford mentality after Bournemouth draw #BRENTFORDFC

Mbeumo’s fourth of the season cancelled out goals from Dominic Solanke and David Brooks after Mathias Jensen put Brentford in the lead for Brentford in the first half. And Frank praised his team’s second-half display which saw them extend their unbeaten start to the season, with six points on the board. “First half we were good but second half we were fantastic,” Frank said. “I think we ran over Bournemouth in the second half and we created chance after chance. "The only chance I can remember from Bournemouth was the goal, and that was a mistake from Rico (Henry). "But the mentality in this team is incredible. What character. They never give up, they will never die. "After we got a more than well-deserved equaliser, we still went for it, with centre-backs Nathan Collins and Kristoffer Ajer still overlapping. "I am very proud of the team's performance. "If we play this 100 times, we win it 98, draw one, that was (Saturday), and lose the other time, because there were so many big chances."

  • #PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony on assist for David Brooks against Swansea in League cup #AFCB

Anthony provided a fantastic assist for Brooks to equalise after Cherries trailed 1-0 in Wales thanks to Matt Grimes’ first-half penalty. The away side then took a lead through Hamed Traore, before the hosts again levelled scores via Jamie Patterson. In the end it was substitute Ryan Christie who had the last say, finding the bottom corner in the 90th minute to send Cherries through to the next round. Discussing his assist for Cherries’ first, Anthony insisted that Brooks deserved the credit for applying the finishing touch. He told the Daily Echo: “It was a good ball and to be fair it's not an easy finish either, on his weak foot. “I think he's had a really good pre-season and a start to the season in front of goal. “I'm happy he could put it away and help us to win.” Brooks’ goal came about after Cherries won the ball high up the pitch, with Anthony believing the strike to be representative of the way Andoni Iraola wants Cherries to play. “I think the manager wants us to be aggressive in every game,” explained the 23-year-old. “It's a perfect example of the high press and what that can do. “Win it back and then attacking pass, and we get the goal - happy days. “The most important thing was getting through to the next round. “The first half, we knew we weren't at the races and we knew we had to react in the second half. “I think obviously the second goal is probably a bit unfortunate, but I think we deserved what we got in the end.” The draw for the third round will be made on Wednesday evening, following the conclusion of second round ties. Teams will not be regionalised, meaning Cherries could be handed another lengthy trek. Sides competing in Europe enter at this stage of the competition, with third round ties being staged the week commencing Monday, September 25.

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola on first win as AFC Bournemouth boss in league cup #AFCB

Cherries had to come from behind to triumph 3-2 in south Wales, Ryan Christie netting a stoppage-time winner after earlier strikes from David Brooks and Hamed Traore. Matt Grimes had put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the eighth minute, a lead they held until half-time. It marks a first victory for the Spaniard since joining the club over the summer, after three Premier League games so far without a win. Ryan Christie fired home a late winner (Image: PA) Asked if the feeling was relief at eventually getting over the line against Championship opposition in Swansea, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “I think it was a game with two very different parts, two very different halves. “I think we started very bad. Probably the worst way to start, conceding a penalty and we were very slow to move the ball in the first half. “We only had to improve in the second half. I think the rhythm was different in the second half. “We moved the ball much quicker, the rhythm was much higher. And then we were in control of the game. “I think we should have probably won the game earlier, but in the end this is the cup and sometimes you have to suffer.” Iraola’s frustration with the first-half display was evident by his triple substitution at the break. “It was about not only the names and the subs, it was about the attitude, the willingness to attack the spaces, to be more direct, not receive the ball only facing our goal. “To be more aware of the situations, open the game and the pitch a little bit more. “I think especially with Milos (Kerkez) and Jaidon (Anthony), we were opening the left wing very well and then we could find Junior (Traore) and Philip (Billing) inside and from there we were much better.” Although Iraola made seven changes to the starting line-up which had faced Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, it was a strong selection full of players who have featured in the league this season, aside from debutant Andrei Radu in goal. Discussing the importance he places in staying in the cup competitions, Iraola said: “In the end it is not that you make changes or play a weaker team in the cup and they give you an extra (free) weekend. “No, they are not giving you anything. “At the end, it is also a way of very good training for us and in the next round also we will try to win the game, because at the end you never know when a good run can happen. “You have to try it every single year.”

  • #PLStories- Roberto De Zerbi reveals no surprise in defeat to West Ham #BHAFC

If this game wasn’t a reality check, then what followed from Roberto De Zerbi certainly was. At least that appeared the intention from the head coach after this first defeat of the season. One reality is Albion won’t change their way of playing. They just need to do it better. Another reality is that, ideally, they need to fill a gap or two which were visible to a degree in their two 4-1 wins and more obvious on this occasion. Having (understandably) cashed in their insurance policy, Albion cannot afford to leave the back door unlocked like they did on Saturday. They piled men forward, piled up passes and got into a whole pile of trouble on counter-attacks. Not just how they dealt with those counter-raids but that they were allowed to happen in the first place. This game felt a bit like a 5-1 reverse to Everton late in the last campaign (a game in which Moises Caicedo played, let’s not forget). West Ham had the right plan, the right personnel and, like the Toffees back on that rainy Bank Holiday, a goalkeeper in good form. Counter-attack goals from perennial Amex threat James Ward-Prowse, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio put them out of reach. But the home side, always capable of creating danger, might still have snatched some reward after Pascal Gross reduced arrears. In that Everton game, De Zerbi felt his side were too cavalier in how they chased the game after going behind in the first few seconds. Here, he again said they needed to be more aware of the time available. Defeat came at the end of a week when Albion had been showered with praise. But it was a reminder of the tests posed by the Premier League. De Zerbi said: “We are Brighton and maybe the people are confused when they think of Brighton. “Brighton can lose the game with West Ham. Why not? “They can lose the game against Everton. “Then we want to win against everyone. We are playing with courage, with pride and we want to make our fans happy, winning every game or winning the Europa League. “But we can’t forget we are Brighton. “YOU can’t forget we are Brighton. “YOU can’t forget we lost three big players because we are not honest otherwise and I want to be honest. “I will fight to win every game but for us, for our fans, for our club, we have to be clear and honest.” After losing Julio Enciso to injury, De Zerbi said he wants a No.10 as well as a Caicedo type in midfield and one other player in an unspecified position. The latter may well be a specialist right-back. Here, they had found some momentum after a slow start when poor execution of the right plan caught them out. Adam Webster tried to force a pass but saw the ball cut out by Ward-Prowse, who helped it forward. That was when Webster should have kept it simple as he got to the ball before Antonio, rather than trying a pass back to Bart Verbruggen which fell short. Billy Gilmour got back to block from Ward-Prowse but the ball bounced back for the Hammer to tap in. De Zerbi said: “When we concede the first goal, the mistake by Adam Webster wasn’t the last part with Antonio. “With the pass, he took a big risk. In another way we can play, we move the ball faster to move the opponent right and left but we have to keep the ball. “We can’t lose the ball in that way because we were attacking with a lot of players and the first thing is to keep the ball and don’t lose the ball. “But anyway there was the possibility to defend better after this mistake on the pass. “But Webster is still one of the most important players and it is not a problem.” Alphonse Areola denied Evan Ferguson soon after that goal and early in the second period before Bowen outpaced Pervis Estupinan to reach Said Benrahma’s cross and finish cleverly. Antonio left Webster standing to drive home the third and, after Gross shot into the bottom corner to re-ignite hope, Areola’s saves from Joel Veltman and Ferguson killed hopes of a comeback. There were also penalty shouts for handball and for a clip on Kauro Mitoma, plus a goal-saving clearance by Danny Ings from a Lewis Dunk header, as Albion swarmed towards the North Stand. If you are going to lose, then go down fighting, attacking, giving it your all. Albion certainly did all that. But they should not have dug themselves that hole in the first place. Albion: Verbruggen; Milner (Veltman 72), Dunk, Webster, Estupinan: Gross, Gilmour (Lallana 60); March (72), Welbeck (Joao Pedro 60), Mitoma: Ferguson. Subs: Steele, Igor, Dahoud, van Hecke, Buonanotte Goal: Gross 81. Yellow card: Mitoma West Ham: Areola: Coufal, Zouma, Ogbonna, Emerson: Soucek (Benrahma 39), Alvarez (Fornals 84), Ward-Prowse: Bowen, Antonio (Kehrer 79), Paqueta (Ings 85). Subs: Fabianski, Johnson, Cresswell, Cornet, Mubama. Goals: Ward-Prowse 19, Bowen 58, Antonio 63. Yellow card: Ward-Prowse 24 (foul), Alvarez 45+1 (foul), Kehrer 89 (foul). Referee: Anthony Taylor. Minimum stoppage time indicated: 4+6.

The Albion boss handed Holland under-21 international Bart Verbruggen his debut in place of Jason Steele against West Ham. Having made crucial saves in the first two games, Steele remained on the bench against the Hammers. De Zerbi said: “They will play depending on the opponent, depending on the physical condition, but I believe in Bart the same way as Jason. “They will play 50% of the games this year. “We are lucky to have in our squad two great goalkeepers.” Verbruggen, who was blameless on the West Ham goals, said: “Jason was doing really well but the thing is that we have a team where in every position we have more players who can play and make an impact. “I think that’s the biggest strength about this team. “If a person gets replaced, nothing really changes. “Of course everyone has his own characteristics and qualities, but there’s no huge changes. “I know that’s a strength of the team and everybody needs to be ready every week and that’s what I try to do.”

Town boss Rob Edwards insisted he saw signs of real improvement in his side despite their 3-0 defeat at Chelsea on Friday night. The Hatters were going up against a team that on paper, cost just under the princely sum of £450m to assemble, with two £100m-plus midfielders patrolling the central areas in British transfer record holder Moises Caicedo and Argentina World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez. They dominated possession early on as expected, having the quality to take the lead through a fine solo goal from England international Raheem Sterling, himself a £47.5m acquisition last summer.Luton boss Rob Edwards greets opposite number Mauricio Pochettino at Stamford Bridge - pic: Liam SmithTown weren’t without their spells of pressure though, particularly before and after the break, but crucially they couldn’t find the net, Ryan Giles’ deflected shot saved by Robert Sanchez the closest they came.Sterling then added a second with 68 minutes gone, while Senegalese forward Nicholas Jackson, who cost a mere £31.8m, still far more than Town’s entire squad was put together for, completed the scoring.Despite that, Edwards felt Luton had been better than their opening day 4-1 reverse at Brighton & Hove Albion, saying: “We don't like losing, I’ve got to stress that.“We know we want to win games, we know we want to get points, but I've seen improvement from 13 days ago.“I saw we can compete with a top, top team for massive spells of the game, so that's a huge thing to be proud of and to take positives from.“The lads have reacted so, so well from Brighton."We’re going to be able to take loads from this game and a lot of it are positives, but we know there are areas we need to keep working on and improving, but we were competitive with Chelsea Football Club.“I’m not going to go through the numbers, we all know, they're a huge club who have won the Champions League a couple of times in recent years, so lets be honest, should we be competing with them?“But we did, so loads of good stuff.“Where we've got to improve now, is continue to work really hard, and those moments, at both ends of the pitch are really, really key now.“We did create half opportunities, and one decent one.“You don't get many when you come here, so we've got to try and be a bit more ruthless and then at the bottom end, if we get a little bit stretched we've just got to make sure we close those gaps really, really quickly."They've got the quality to pick someone out, they’ve got the quality to then finish it, but lots to take, lots of positive things.”Town looked like they might be able to cause an upset in the early stages of the second period, as they began to have the better of proceedings, none more so than when Giles went close.Edwards knows it’s moments like that they need to really drive home their advantage at this level, as he continued: “I felt we started the second half really well, very positively."We had the territory, it was in their half, we weren’t able to create loads of chances, but I felt we’re looking strong in this game now, maybe they were ready to have a little bit of a wobble."We had moments to cross, we just lacked that little bit of quality, that little finesse, we didn’t pick someone out."Ryan Giles had a good opportunity that was half blocked, probably our cleanest one“It was a big moment for us, you’re not going to get many chances here at Stamford Bridge, but that was a really well-worked opportunity and really they defended it well as they got the block.“Then the game was going a bit more end-to-end, getting a bit stretched, and clearly then they become very dangerous as well, but because we’re in the game you can't change too much."You’ve got to hope that we can see any dangerous moments out, that second goal probably deflated us a little bit, we've got to make sure that we learn that third one doesn’t come, because even at 2-0 you’re still in the game.”After being breached by Sterling’s close-range finish for the crucial second goal, and then conceding again shortly afterwards, Jackson prodding home, with 15 minutes to go, there was a worry Town could go under and their goal difference take a hit. However, they didn’t and almost grabbed a consolation for the 3,054 away fans to celebrate, substitute Jacob Brown going close, lofting his effort off target when looking to capitalise on some defensive hesitancy.Edwards added: “I’m extremely proud of the group, as I saw full commitment to the gameplan, saw a group that stayed together right to the very, very end, didn't go under, and it competed with a brilliant football team.“I can see a real cohesion in the group, well organised, and a commitment there as well, so there’s a lot of good things, but we don’t like losing, none of us like losing and we want to pick up points.“We're a new group as well, I've got to stress that."There's a lot of new players there experiencing Premier League football for the first time and it doesn't get more difficult than Brighton away and Chelsea away.“Maybe one or two games, but we can take a lot from it, we'll learn and learn quickly, but I think we'll see more improvement in a week's time.”

But he said they lost balance in the 3-1 defeat. Albion had plenty of possession and territory but were hit a ruthless away side who also defended in depth. De Zerbi said: “I’m disappointed with the result. “It wasn’t the best game in my time but I think we didn’t play bad. “We didn’t play a great, great game but we played a good game - enough to get a point. “We conceded the first goal in a bad way, in a stupid way. “I don’t understand yet what happened in the part of the pitch in that situation between Webster and Antonio and we concede a goal. “And then West Ham defended in the last 20 minutes with very small spaces and it became very difficult to find the condition to score. “Anyway, we shot 27 times, we created ten, 11 chances to score. “And in the second half I am disappointed because we lost the balance. “The games are 90 minutes plus extra time and we have not to lose the balance. “But we are Brighton. We have to improve the team, improve the players, improve the understanding of the game.” West Ham keeper Alphonse Areola made stunning saves from Joel Veltman and Evan Ferguson to cut short hopes of a comeback after Pascal Gross made it 3-1. De Zerbi said: “Areola was, I think, the best player on the pitch but West Ham are still a very good team. “In the last transfer market you can understand how many very good players they brought.”

Cherries fell to a 2-0 defeat to Spurs, with goals from James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, either side of half-time. Shortly before Kulusevski’s goal, Iraola made a double change with Jaidon Anthony and Hamed Traore replacing Justin Kluivert and Christie, the latter having impressed in the first half particularly. Reflecting on the defeat, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “After the game you think and probably I shouldn’t have taken Ryan out from the game. “Especially without the ball, he was pressing really well. He was doing a good amount. “Probably I wanted to go a little bit more offensive, but we were worse I think from that point. “I don’t know if it’s after the subs or after the 2-0, because it was just one minute later. But probably until the 62nd minute, we were playing well against a very good team. “We were having our chances, I was quite happy with the performance. “From there, we couldn’t keep the intensity and they were controlling the game much easier.” He added: “I was disappointed with the end of the game, after 2-0. “I think until 2-0, the team was playing well. It looked like in this moment we had the chances to score for 1-1, but from there we lacked a little bit of intensity. “They were more comfortable on the ball and we didn’t finish the game well.” Cherries are still searching for their first win, with one point from their opening three fixtures. They head to Swansea City in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday, before travelling to Brentford in the Premier League next weekend. “We knew from the beginning we had a really tough schedule to start,” said Iraola. “But now we also have some important players out with injuries. “But we have to keep competing and try and take points from every game.”

Adams over the weekend completed his switch to the south coast from Leeds United, for a reported £23million. The midfielder made 26 appearances for Leeds last season, but could not prevent them from suffering relegation into the Championship. However, he has quickly found himself back in the top tier, with Cherries. “I’m very excited to say the least,” the 24-year-old told afcbTV. “The excitement of the Premier League last year was amazing. It was a dream come true to have an opportunity to represent a team and obviously how the season ended wasn’t to my liking. “Now to have the opportunity to join another amazing club like Bournemouth, I’m very excited to get started.” Asked what he learnt about the Premier League from playing in it last season, the USA captain added: “That it’s the best league in the world. It definitely doesn’t lack quality. “Week in, week out you’re playing games against the highest calibre of players, highest calibre of managers and it throws something new at you every opportunity that you get. “Growing up, all I watched was the Premier League. So last year, having that opportunity to fulfil that dream was amazing.” Adams had previously been linked with a move away to Chelsea earlier this summer, but has now completed his switch to Cherries. “A lot of things attracted me to Bournemouth,” he explained. “The manager himself is one of the up and coming young managers in the world. “He was actually playing for NYCFC when I was playing at New York Red Bulls and coming through the system there, so having a little bit of familiarity there. “The amazing sporting director (Richard Hughes) and CEO (Neill Blake), through so many conversations about how I’ll be used in this amazing project that they’re building here was very exciting as well.” He added: “The club’s ambition is something that matches mine for sure. “They want to take their game to the top and they have people in and around the club now that are able to do that. “When they showed that ambition through the owner, the CEO and the sporting director, now having an ambitious coach as well, attracting players, which is very important obviously to the succession of the team, it excited me a lot.” During his time with New York Red Bulls and RB Leipzig, Adams has already racked up trophies including the MLS Supporters Shield and DFB-Pokal. Discussing those past experiences he can bring into the young squad at Cherries, the Wappingers Falls-born talent said: “I’ve been extremely fortunate for some of the clubs that I’ve played in and some of the situations that I’ve been involved in. “Winning a Supporters Shield in MLS at a very young age inside a very good team, going to Germany and playing in a couple of cup finals and having the opportunity to win one as well. “I’ve been very fortunate I would say. The teams that I’ve been on have been very, very good. “And taking those experiences and taking that hunger to want to win titles, hopefully I can bring that here and start to push the club forward.”

A devastating start to the second half saw them secure a 4-1 success at Wolves. The head coach said the win was in memory of Carlo Mazzone, who had three years in charge of Brescia during a long coaching career and has died at the age of 86. De Zerbi said: "He was one of the best Italian coaches. He was a coach of my town. He was a big man, big person and big coach. “I’m really pleased with the performance and the result. We played really well. “I’m really pleased because we changed three players in the starting XI and they played like the last game against Luton." De Zerbi felt his side could have pushed on after Solly March (2) and Pervis Estupinan added to Kaoru Mitoma’s sensational first-half opener. He added: “We’ve started very well in the Premier League and we played very well until we it was 4-0. “Then we could play better but anyway, I’m happy. If we something to improve, we can do so in that part of the game. “But I’ve spoken to the players and I’ve spoken my opinion to them. “If we want to fix big targets, we can improve."

The former Brighton & Hove Albion man was given his marching orders after catching Ryan Christie with a late tackle early in the second half at Anfield. Liverpool led 2-1 at the time, going on to secure a 3-1 victory, cancelling out Antoine Semenyo's early opener. Asked about Mac Allister's red card, Liverpool boss Klopp said: "I saw it back. The amount of times I got asked about it shows already it’s worth discussing it again, which we will probably be. "I asked Macca and he said ‘I touched him, but not really’. That was all he told me and then after the game I saw him back and if you are going to have a list of points we need to give a red card, I think the majority, besides contact, no other box is actually ticked at that moment. "It is a decision I think we all agree if he gives a yellow card, VAR will not overturn it and now they have given a red card VAR is not overturning it because the contact means there is no clear and obvious mistake. "But I think the punishment, 40 minutes with 10 men today, is already punishment enough. We have to talk to the authorities."

O'Neil regularly complained about refereeing decisions during his spell in charge of Cherries, the Dorset club the only team in the Premier League not to be awarded a spot-kick last term. With Wolves 1-0 down to Manchester United on Monday night, Red Devils debutant goalkeeper Andre Onana clattered into Sasa Kalajdzic deep into time added on, but Simon Hooper did not react and VAR Michael Salisbury deemed there was no foul, with an incredulous O’Neil instead booked for his reaction. The hosts closed out the narrow victory at Old Trafford. O’Neil said after the match he though Onana was trying to take Kalajdzic’s head off, and then revealed he had received an immediately apology from Premier League referees’ boss Moss. “Having just spoken to Jon Moss, fair enough he came straight out and said it was a blatant penalty and it should have been given,” O’Neil said. “I sometimes feel bad. I’ve spent a lot of my day with him trying to understand the new guidelines and how to not get myself booked which I’ve failed in, but fair play to Jon in coming out. “He said it was clear and obvious and he can’t believe the on-field referee didn’t give it and he can’t believe VAR didn’t intervene. It’s probably made me feel worse to be honest because once you know you’re right you feel worse about leaving with nothing.” O'Neil replaced Julen Lopetegui as Wolves boss last week, having been sacked by Cherries in June, with Andoni Iraola appointed.

The Ecuador international was not involved on Saturday as Chelsea moved in to hijack Liverpool’s £111 million move for the player. While the deal has not been completed, the midfielder is now expected to head to Stamford Bridge for a British record fee. Albion did not require his particular qualities in the season-opener as they beat Luton 4-1 at the Amex. But De Zerbi wants a replacement for Caicedo to be brought in rather than, as on Saturday, giving his midfield a different look. He told The Argus: “Yes, I think we need another midfielder if Caicedo leaves. And, for me, he can leave. “We need another midfielder with the same characteristics, the same importance. “In the Premier League, you know better than me, in midfield positions, sometimes you need more kilogrammes, more impact.” Mahmoud Dahoud started in midfield against the Hatters and impressed with his range of passing. De Zerbi said: “Dahoud is a great player for us because he is specific for our idea of football, for our style of play. “But I think we lost different characteristics. “Dahoud is different to Moises Caicedo.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola on Cherries’ change of style against West Ham #AFCB

Trailing to Jarrod Bowen’s goal early in the second half, Iraola turned to his bench with forwards Justin Kluivert, Kieffer Moore and Antoine Semenyo all introduced. Cherries eventually carved out an equaliser, Dominic Solanke tucked home after latching onto Semenyo’s wayward shot. Reflecting on the 1-1 draw, Iraola said: “The first half for me was too slow. We were on the ball but we weren’t really creating chances. We improved after. “Especially in the second half I think we were more direct, because we couldn’t find spaces in the middle. "It’s difficult, especially when we were losing the game, we closed everything inside and we had to go through the outside, play a little bit more direct, crossing, and I think we were better when we did this. “With Kieff, with Justin, with Antoine, who helped us a lot. In the second half, I think we finished better. “I think we were better when we were more direct. “We had to go more direct and we ended the game with Kieff and Dom up front, with Justin and Semenyo. The four of them could be a number nine. “It was risky, but we were losing. At the end Joe (Rothwell) and Phil had to cover a lot of space. “But I think once the game opened a little bit and we were more direct and there were more spaces for everything, I think we were better.” Asked if he got the performance he expected from his side in his first competitive game in charge, Iraola added: “You always expect to play very good and to win the games. But for sure West Ham expected the same. “There were some positives, but also some things that we have to improve. “I was quite critical with the team during half-time, because we were moving the ball very, very slow. “They were just shuffling and sliding and we couldn’t find spaces. “We improved in the second half, not as much as we’d like, but I think we were in the positive tendency.”

  • #PLStories- David Moyes beleives Dominic Solanke goal for Bournemouth was ‘lucky’ #WHUFC

The Hammers were on course for an away win to start their Premier League season, thanks to Jarrod Bowen’s brilliant strike. But Cherries earned a 1-1 draw, Solanke skipping around goalkeeper Alphonse Areola to tuck home, after he collected the ball in the box following Antoine Semenyo’s wayward shot. Asked if he felt his defence switching off cost his side victory, Moyes said: “I don’t know if I’d agree that it was a loss of concentration. I would say it was a really unfortunate moment. “The boy has struck it, it has hit Tomas Soucek’s heel and diverted into the boy’s path. To be fair, he rounds the goalkeeper really well. “It was a completely lucky moment. But also a moment they’ll probably say their centre-forward anticipated it very well.” Discussing the game as a whole, Moyes added: “I didn’t think we looked as if we were going to desperately concede. They had a couple of shots which had come close. “Their size and stature got bigger as the game went on and it put us under pressure with corner kicks, more than when they were getting them earlier. “But it was disappointing. If you look at the goal, it’s a really scruffy goal. “I don’t know if the boy crosses it or shoots, but we should’ve done maybe better to stop that in the first place. It hits Tomas Soucek’s heel and bounces into the line of the centre forward. “It was really bad fortune by us, but we probably brought it on. “We didn’t do enough to control the game midway through the second half. I just thought we looked as if once we got the goal, we’d try and find a way of hanging on.” Moyes was facing a Cherries side managed in a competitive fixture for the first time by Andoni Iraola, the Spaniard having arrived from Rayo Vallecano over the summer. “I was a bit unsure what to expect from Bournemouth in how they would play,” former Manchester United boss Moyes admitted. “We dealt with it, in the main, with a bit of a mid-block. We didn’t really go after the ball as much as we can. But for long periods it worked. “I think you’ll see a lot of changes this year. I’m watching some games at the moment where there is not as much intensity, because the quality of some of the teams are so good on the ball, it means why would you expose yourself to the teams playing round you? “I think you’re going to see a lot more of that this season.”

The Seagulls saw off promoted Luton 4-1 with goals from Solly March, Joao Pedro (penalty), Simon Adingra and Evan Ferguson. They also hit the post on three occasions. De Zerbi said: “I think we played well - not one of the best games in my time. “But we need much time to reach the same level, the same quality of play as last season. “Anyway, we won a very tough game. “We played well also in the first half. Maybe we could move the ball faster, change parts where we were attacking. But I am really pleased.” De Zerbi looked unhappy with some aspects of the performance, turning away even as Albion constructed the move which saw March head the opener. He said: “I think in the first half we moved the ball not so fast and, when you play against 11 players behind the line of the ball, you have to move the opponent. “If you want to attack in the right way, you have to be faster. “Solly could play faster. Sometimes he kept the ball too much time. “But Solly is a great player and I am happy for his goal because he started very well.”

Anthony played the first hour of the contest, coming off as Cherries trailed to Jarrod Bowen’s curled effort from outside the box. Dominic Solanke popped up eight minutes from time to ensure the spoils from Andoni Iraola’s first game in charge of Cherries would be shared. Speaking to the Daily Echo after the game, Anthony commented: “Tough fight. “They're a good side, they're good at what they do. “But, probably a good point. “It's a positive start. “Obviously we wanted the win, but, they're really good at what they do and it was a tough game. “Like I said, I think we got what we deserved and went in the right direction.” Asked if he felt a difference between the intensity of pre-season and competitive football, Anthony replied: “Maybe. “The manager’s pushed us hard in pre-season, so I feel like we put a lot into that. “It was a big day for us today. “They're really good at what they do, they make it hard. I feel like we brought up a good fight and got what we deserved.” Anthony and Cherries’ focus now turns to a trip to Anfield next weekend, when they face Liverpool on Saturday, August 19.

Luton defender Tom Lockyer said he was left ‘speechless’ after being made club captain by manager Rob Edwards. Previous captain Sonny Bradley left in the summer, meaning 28-year-old Lockyer will become the first Hatters player to step foot onto a pitch in a Premier League game when Luton take on Brighton in tomorrow’s season-opener at the Lamex Stadium. “It’s surreal,” said the central defender. “I’m a little bit speechless and how to describe how it feels, but it’s incredible – a massive honour not just for me but my family as well. It’s not something I take lightly. I’m speechless.Tom Lockyer“Saturday will be a special occasion. As I’ve said, it’s a massive honour to lead such a good club, which has felt like home since I stepped through the door, to walk out the lads in the Premier League with the armband on. It’s really special.“It’s a great squad and good that we don’t have to manage any massive egos. Everyone is pretty grounded, we’re all normal fellas. We all get on really well but it won’t just be me driving the standards or keeping people in line. That comes from everyone. Everyone’s got their own high standards, and whatever those were last year, this year they need to be higher.”Explaining why he chose Lockyer, Edwards said: “He was the natural choice. His performances for us since we arrived have been incredibly high and incredibly consistent. He demands high standards and has the respect and trust of us all.“We’re delighted to have him as captain, it’s something he thoroughly deserves.”

  • #PLStories- Burnley boss Kompany on Man City game, Ramsey and Berge #BURNLEYFC

The deal for the 20-year-old from Aston Villa is expected to be completed imminently and Kompany is excited by his potential, having seen him during loan spells last season at Norwich and Middlesbrough. “The latest I’ve heard is that we’re close,” said the Clarets boss. “He’s not our player yet but I hope he will be soon. “Those who have followed the Championship and know a bit about the up-and-coming talents in English football (know his potential). He will be an England international for me, it’s just a matter of time.” Ramsey would make it 11 summer signings for Kompany as he prepares for his first campaign as a Premier League manager. Norway midfielder Sander Berge was the latest to arrive on Wednesday after moving from fellow newly-promoted side Sheffield United. “Sander Berge is a player with Premier League experience, which is important for us,” said Kompany. “We don’t have a lot at the moment. “He’s a player with size, technically good, able to receive the ball either in the first phase or in between the lines a little bit higher up. And a player who we hope we can bring to his full potential.” Burnley fans will have to wait longer to see if last season’s loan stars Ian Maatsen and Nathan Tella will be returning to Turf Moor, with Kompany saying: “I have to respect that the decision is not ours even if they’re very good players that we like.” He will not be pursuing a deal, though, for former Everton winger Andros Townsend, who has been training with the club following his release by the Toffees. “He’s been brilliant, he’s been fit, working hard, but, in terms of what we already had in the building and the players we also wanted to bring in, it didn’t make sense for us to complete,” added Kompany. “My advice to any manager that’s still looking for a winger is to approach him.” The fixture computer threw up an immediate reunion for Kompany with his old team Manchester City, who will make the short trip to Turf Moor on Friday. If there is a good time to play the three-time defending champions, this could potentially be it given Burnley were in pre-season before City completed their treble by winning the Champions League. “I’m sure after winning the treble he’s all right starting the season slightly behind,” said Kompany with a smile. “It’s probably the best challenge you could ever ask for. I want the team to embrace this game and hopefully the fans can do the same.” Kompany remains close to many people at City, including Pep Guardiola, and he said: “There’s been an awkward month where there was just congratulations flying back and forth between a lot of people. “They are people that I’ve worked with and lived with for many years in my life. The contact will always be there. “Now for a minute we have to put everything behind us and just go toe to toe, and we’ll try and do the best we can.”

  • #PLStories- AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola on new signing Max Aarons #AFCB

Signed on Thursday for an initial £7million from Norwich City, Aarons has only had one training session with his new teammates. Cherries start their Premier League campaign with the visit of West Ham to Vitality Stadium tomorrow afternoon (3pm). The absence of Adam Smith and Ryan Fredericks means head coach Iraola has a headache at right-back, with Aarons the only fit senior player who is a natural at the position. Aarons did not feature in any of Norwich City’s pre-season friendlies this summer after it was made abundantly clear that he was looking to move to pastures anew. The 23-year-old had entered the final 12 months of his deal at Carrow Road, and after 213 appearances for the Canaries, had felt he had accomplished all he could with Norwich. Whilst Aarons was absent for Norwich’s pre-season fixtures, he did compete for England’s under-21s this summer, helping the Young Lions lift the under-21 European Championships. The injured Smith missed the final pre-season of the season, with winger Jaidon Anthony deployed in his stead. Iraola mentioned that Anthony was again in his thoughts at right-back, but that he could also turn to Chris Mepham if he needed a more defensively-sound alternative. Primarily a centre-back, Mepham has previously played as a full-back under former Cherries managers. James Hill is another centre-back that has moonlighted as a right-back, both for loan club Hearts last year and for Cherries this pre-season. Asked if Aarons was available to start against West Ham, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “Yes, I think it's an option. “It's an option. “We can start also with Jaidon (Anthony). “We can go with Chris (Mepham) if we want to go more defensive. “We have two, three options that we could use. “But first I would like to see how they train today and take the final decision.” The deal for Aarons could potential rise to £13million. The England under-21 international is viewed both as a prospect for the feature, but experienced, having already played 70 times in the Premier League. Discussing his defensive recruit, Iraola shared: “I think for his age, he has already a good bunch of Premier League games. “I think he has been playing in this level. “He has international experience. “He has been playing this summer with national teams. “And I think he will help us straight away, even if he's young. “He's not as young as some of the signings we made. “He has the experience and he will help us for sure.”

  • #PLStories- Praises reciprocated between AFC Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola and West Ham United manager David Moyes #WHUFC #AFCB

The Hammers visit Vitality Stadium tomorrow afternoon (3pm) as the first competitive opponents Iraola will face as Cherries boss. It is not the first time Iraola has crossed paths with the Scot, having played against Moyes on one occasion whilst playing for Athletic Club in La Liga. Moyes managed Athletic’s fierce rivals Real Sociedad for a year, all three Basque derbies ending in ties. Speaking about the man in the opposing dugout this weekend, Iraola stated: “David (Moyes) is a very, very good coach. “He has been really successful. “Past season, they won a European championship. “He also coached in Spain, so I knew him before. “But overall they are a really solid team. “They have quite a lot of options. "They can go more direct, they have very good wingers, they are really good in set pieces. “I think we have to be really focused not to make mistakes because they are the kind of team that if you make one mistake, they score the first goal and then it's very difficult to play against their result.” Praise was reciprocated by Moyes in his own pre-match press conference. The West Ham boss shared: "Bournemouth have always done well and they have a new approach this season under Andoni Iraola. "I think it's always a hard game at Bournemouth, but we had a good win there last year and we hope we can get another one tomorrow." "I made the transition to Spain and it's not easy going to manage in La Liga, just as it won't be easy for him coming to the Premier League, but he must have done something for Bournemouth to appoint him and I'm sure he has the characteristics to adapt. "Andoni is from the Basque Country, where there are really good people, and I'm sure he is one of them."

  • #PLStories- Rob Edwards happy with pre season but counts the injuries #LUTONTOWNFC

Luton boss Rob Edwards is hopeful that the injuries picked up by Jordan Clark and Dan Potts during yesterday’s pre-season double-header out in Germany aren’t too serious ahead of this weekend’s Premier League opener at Brighton & Hove Albion.Midfielder Clark, who scored Town’s goal in their Championship play-off final victory over Coventry City back in May, was stretched off in the Hatters’ first game against their Bundesliga opponents, which saw them beaten 2-1.Meanwhile, Potts then only lasted 26 minutes of the second match, Luton running out 3-1 winners thanks to Luke Berry’s double, as giving an update on the pair after the match, Edwards said: “It was a really good exercise, we've been able to get everyone minutes.Dan Potts picked up an injury against Vfl Bochum on Saturday - pic: David Rogers/Getty Images“Hopefully Pottsy and Clicker are not too bad, initial examinations show hopefully they’ll be okay fairly quickly, but we’ll be able to assess them in more detail when we get back home.“I felt like the first game we probably looked a little bit tired, the majority of those lads played the majority of the minutes against Wolves.“It’s been a quick turnaround from that game and I thought we lacked a little bit of intensity."It was a good moment as we finished the first half well, started the second half well and then looked a little bit more jaded.“We need to push some of them to get through the minutes there, so some positives there."Second game I thought we had a bit more life and I was really pleased with one or two.“I was really pleased with younger players, they’ve come out here and acquitted themselves really well."So overall, a really good worthwhile practice, bits to keep working on as always, but sets us up nicely going into the final week of preparations.”

Hatters boss Rob Edwards has hailed the ‘incredible' support received from CEO Gary Sweet and the rest of Luton’s board in his efforts to bolster Town’s squad for the upcoming Premier League season. With the club going into a summer transfer window like no other, having their coffers boosted by around £100m after winning the Championship play-off final at Wembley, the Hatters haven’t been able to pump it all into signing players, shelling out over £10m on ground improvements to make sure Kenilworth Road can host top flight games this term.Town are also ring-fencing a large chunk of it to finance their new ground at Power Court, leaving Luton with much less than the other promoted teams, and the rest of their rivals, to spend on new additions.Town legend Mick Harford, the Hatters' chief recruitment officer, plus chairman David Wilkinson and CEO Gary Sweet watch on as Luton drew with Wolves on Wednesday night - pic: Eddie Keogh/Getty ImagesDespite that, owners 2020 are still making a real fist of it, as ahead of the window, the club had spent £1m just twice in their previous 138-year history, when signing Croatian goalkeeper Simon Sluga in 2019 and striker Carlton Morris last summer. However, the Hatters have now done that up to four times in the space of a month, with Mads Andersen, Tahith Chong, Ryan Giles and Thomas Kaminski all believed to have cost seven figures. It might even be five, the fee not revealed for Marvelous Nakamba when joining from Aston Villa as well, as when asked about the backing he had received in his hunt for new players, Edwards said: “Gary and the board have been incredible, but I think there’s a clear strategy as well."You can see that with our recruitment, we’re bringing in good people, good players, players that we feel first of all can thrive at this level now and try and keep kicking us on and keep kicking us forward."Some of them, Marv, has got Premier League experience, but we feel that they’ve performed so well in the Championship that they’re able to make that step up.”After revealing that Luke Freeman, Admiral Muskwe, Dion Pereira and Glen Rea are likely to leave the club during the current window to free up spaces in Town’s squad, Edwards reiterated his desire to carry on adding to the six new faces he has already secured. He added: “There’s a 25-man squad that you can announce."We haven’t got to fill that, I want a nice tight group to work with and a group that feel all involved and have got a chance to get those minutes."But we need competition throughout the squad in every position, so there’s a couple of areas that I still want to try and do a little bit more work in."I won't say anything yet, but we’re working hard behind the scenes to try and do that, like everyone is."You’ll hear that up and down the country at the moment, but there will be a few more.”

Albion wanted Colwill as their priority target in defence after an exceptional season on loan from Chelsea. Colwill became pivotal at left centre back as Albion secured Europa League for the first time ever. There were question marks over whether the England under 21 international would stay at Chelsea this season, with Albion guaranteeing him game time and European football if he were to return. Colwill after the 3-0 win against Arsenal (Image: PA) But Colwill, 20, has now agreed a new six-year contract with Mauricio Pochettino’s side and looks set to be one of their starting defenders. He was one of Albion's priority targets this summer but Pochettino insisted he would get the game time he wanted at Chelsea. Colwill posted on his Instagram this evening a message to Brighton. He said: “To Brighton and Hove Albion. “I am proud to have played a small part in the clubs success last season. “You gave me an opportunity to play in the Premier League when no one else did. I thank Graham Potter for first bringing me to the club and to all the employees at the stadium and training ground for making it a great place to perform and develop “To the fans, you’ve always had my back. Since I got into the side, your continuous support made me feel comfortable to play the way I wanted to play and not fear about making mistakes. “You gave me a platform to shine and show my ability in the best league of the world. I will never forget that you supported me. “Lastly Roberto De Zerbi, you challenged me every day. You made me think and see football in a different way. I cannot thank you enough. “Thank you again. LC.” Despite only making 17 Premier League appearances, Colwill became one of the first names on the team sheet in the second half of the season. Chelsea turned down a £30 million bid for Colwill from Albion and it was reported that De Zerbi’s side were set to bid £40 million for him. Albion signed Brazilian defender Igor Julio from Serie A side Fiorentina last Wednesday as an alternative option. The 25-year-old Brazilian signed on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee which is believed to be in the region of £14 million.

I am so happy to reach the Europa League with Brighton, who were the team who opened the doors in the Premier League. It was so good. “Why not give my best for this amazing club?” Asked whether he had a message for supporters, he replied: “Thank you all the fans for your amazing support. “It was amazing last season. • #PLStories- AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola on goalkeepers Andrei Radu and Neto #AFCB

Goalie Radu became the latest addition at Vitality Stadium this summer, joining Cherries on an initial loan from Italian giants Inter Milan. Cherries reportedly hold an option to convert the temporary move to a permanent one in the summer for £7million. The arrival of Radu has allowed Mark Travers to join Stoke City on loan for the season, the highly-rated goalkeeper being given the opportunity of more consistent gametime in order to aid his development. With Iraola’s penchant for knockout competitions and Radu’s notable record of saving penalties, the idea of the goalkeeper being brought in as a shootout specialist for cup campaigns has arisen. However, rather than having Radu serve merely as a back-up to established first choice Neto, Iraola believes the Romanian is more than capable of making the position his own. Asked if Radu had been brought in to serve as a “cup goalkeeper”, Iraola told the Daily Echo: “I think goalkeeping situation, okay, it’s kind of a different position, but we will make the decision for day one. “Then after we will make the decision for day two. “We cannot plan so far ahead because things happen in trainings, performance matters. “I think there was a need on the club because especially I think Mark and the club wanted the situation to be like this. And I think it's good for everyone. “So I think Andrei can help us straight away because he has performed in a high level. He's ready to compete for the position. “And we'll take the decisions day by day, game by game.” Cherries supporters got their first look at Radu last weekend, the goalkeeper coming off the bench to feature in the second half of the 3-1 defeat to Atalanta. FC Lorient visit Dorset as guests for Cherries’ final pre-season friendly, on Saturday, August 5.

  • #PLStories- AFC Bournemouth’s Jaidon Anthony hoping to become more ‘complete’ player #AFCB

Winger Anthony signed a five-year deal back in February to confirm his long-term future lies with Cherries, the former Arsenal youngster now entering his second season in the Premier League. Much has changed since Anthony got his first taste of top-flight football against his former club last August, with the man who handed him his Premier League debut, Scott Parker, long gone. Parker’s replacement Gary O’Neil has also moved on, with Basque boss Andoni Iraola in charge at Cherries. With the Spaniard liking his teams to press high and use the full width of the pitch, it appears the change in management could be a good fit for Anthony. When this was put to the wideman, Anthony told the Daily Echo: “Different playing style, different ideas and I'm enjoying it. “It's been a tough pre-season getting to know the way he wants us to play and to be honest we're still learning as we go, but I think we're all enjoying it and combining into what he wants us to do. “I probably played a lot of my minutes last year as a wing-back and doing a lot of defensive work. “Obviously this year we’ve got a different formation and there's a lot of running in behind, but yes, there's a lot of work to be done on my game especially.” Finding himself at Cherries after being released by Arsenal, it has not been a straight forward path to the top for Anthony, who was playing his football on loan in the sixth tier as recently as 2020. “I'm working out every day to improve not just what I'm not so good at,” continued the 23-year-old. “But what I'm very good at as well, to try and become more of a complete player.” Asked if he has any particular goals for the campaign ahead, Anthony remained coy, sharing: “Nothing too specific, but obviously just want to do as well as I can and try and help wherever I can. “There's obviously personal targets I want to try and hit, but my main goal is to help the team in whatever capacity I’m needed.” With every outfielder encouraged to get forward when the opportunity arises, players often have to deputise in unfamiliar positions to help Cherries keep their shape. After playing as a quasi-wing back for much of last season, Anthony is more than willing to help out at the back if needs must. He restarted: “As a team we want to help each other out where we can and if I'm not attacking then I'm going to try and do my best for the team wherever they need me. “If I have to cover, then that's what I'll do. But my job is to try and attack and create chances and that's what I'm trying to do for the team.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola wants AFC Bournemouth to sign more midfielders #AFCB

The departure of Jefferson Lerma on a free transfer to Crystal Palace, combined with the sale of Ben Pearson to Stoke City this transfer window has seen Cherries’ numbers in the middle of the park dwindle. Gavin Kilkenny has returned to the first team following a loan spell at Charlton, but the youngster does not seem central to the Basque boss’ plans, whilst Joe Rothwell is still not fully fit after an injury at the end of last term. With Philip Billing injured for the visit of Atalanta, Iraola resorted to playing Ryan Christie beside Lewis Cook as his midfield pairing, the Scot usually deployed behind the striker or on the wing. Iraola also explained there was further experimentation with David Brooks, the Welsh international operating as the number 10 behind Dominic Solanke. Iraola told the Daily Echo: “Right now, especially with Philip being out today and Joe (Rothwell) also being in this recuperation process, we lacked players inside. “But we tried Ryan as a number eight. We tried also Brooksie playing inside. Probably they are not their better positions, but right now I think they can help us there in some moments. And is the time to make this provocation. Expanding further, Iraola told BBC Radio Solent: “I think Ryan I prefer him as a number ten. “I think he's more suited for this position or even from the side coming inside. “But right now with the players we have, he can help us. “He played some minutes also against Maccabi there and I think he's tactically smart, so he can be valuable anywhere.” Asked what type of midfielder he would like to see signed, the former Athletic Club man continued: “I think we need probably more than one player there. “I think we need different styles, different types of player that can help us in these three positions we use in the midfield. “But right now we have to wait at the end, the club is trying to sign the players. “Like all the teams, but we have to wait for the right situation. “We all think that it's better to wait a little bit more, even if you don't train (with the new players), but at the end you make the right decision with the correct player, the player that suits your style and think is going to be better for the club.” Cherries host FC Lorient next weekend, before starting their Premier League campaign with the visit of West Ham on Saturday, August 12.

  • #PLStories- Luton defender Tom Lockyer happy to get 90 minutes after a ‘weird’ pre-season #LUTONTOWNFC

Luton defender Tom Lockyer was overjoyed to get a first 90 minutes under his belt since the play-off semi-final second leg win over Sunderland back in May after what he described as a ‘weird’ pre-season.The 28-year-old started training later than the rest of his team-mates after undergoing extensive medical checks following his on-field collapse inside the opening 10 minutes of the play-off final at Wembley, which eventually required an operation to correct an atrial fibrillation in June.Following his new contract, Lockyer was back at the Brache with Town’s squad, but was held back to begin with when the physical activities started to ensure he had made a full recovery. He didn’t play as Town beat Peterborough United 3-1 in a behind-closed-doors at St George’s Park, before heading out to Slovenia for a warm weather training camp.Lockyer then played an hour in the 1-1 draw against Ipswich on Tuesday night, going on to start at Hillsborough for the Hatters’ second match, Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu and Carlton Morris on target in the victory. The Welsh international lasted the entire match, along with James Shea, Alfie Doughty and Mads Andersen, as speaking to the club’s official website on how he found it and the training so far, he said: “Tough, really tough, it's been a different pre-season for myself.“It's been a weird one if I'm being honest, I’ve always been told I’m a couple of weeks behind, but it doesn’t sit right with me.Tom Lockyer applauds the Hatters after a 2-1 pre-season friendly win at Sheffield Wednesday - pic: Ashley Allen/Getty Images“I want to be up with the lads, so to finally get 90 is a good feeling and I know it's in the locker now."When the lads start running in the off season ready for the pre-season, obviously I wasn't allowed to do too much."I was only allowed to do a couple of 5ks just to see where I was at and obviously when the lads are doing their own stuff, they’re sprinting box to boxes and very S&C (strength and conditioning) specific, which I wasn't able to do, which meant when I came in, they were very conscious of me not breaking down as that would set me back further.“So it’s been a different pre-season, but hopefully now with 90 in the tank I can look forward.”With Town heading to Wolves on Wednesday and then travelling to Germany to take on Vfl Bochum in two matches next weekend, on what he expects to do before the Premier League season starts in full at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, August 12, Lockyer continued: “Who knows? It's the S&C who run everything with their numbers and data, whatever I'm asked to play, I’ll play."Obviously I’ll always be pushing for more, but the main thing is to try and be as fit as possible going into that first game.”On the prospect of facing the Seagulls in what will be Town’s first top flight encounter for over 30 years, Lockyer added: “You don't really want to look too far ahead, you can get carried away with the season that is coming up."We have to focus on getting our principles right on the pitch, doing everything we can in training for the first game, so we’re well drilled for that first game."You want to win the pre-season friendlies, but there’s a deeper meaning for us at the minute."Shape, how we want to play, how we want to move the ball, getting to know new players who’ve come in and them getting used to our style of play."So you’ve got to see preseason for what it is, but I’m delighted to get 90 minutes under my belt and I know a few of the lads have as well.”

  • #PLStories- Hatters boss highlights the return of Welsh international Lockyer during Ipswich draw #LUTONTOWNFC

Town boss Rob Edwards recognised the importance of defender Tom Lockyer’s return to action for the Hatters in their 1-1 pre-season friendly draw against Ipswich Town on Tuesday night. The Welsh international was starting a game for the first time since he was stretchered off after collapsing on the pitch during the opening 10 minutes of Luton’s Championship play-off final win over Coventry City back in May.Given the all clear to resume playing after undergoing an operation to correct an atrial fibrillation, and signing a new long-term contract in the summer, Lockyer linked up in a back three that also contained new signing Mads Andersen and Dan Potts. He got through an hour of the contest at Colchester United’s stadium unscathed, and speaking to the club’s official website afterwards, Edwards said: “It was really important doing what he does best out there."He’s a huge figure for us on and off the pitch, so it was really good to have him back out there, in the middle of that back three."He’s going to need some more game time, he’s probably a couple of weeks behind the others because his off season was a little different to a lot of the boys, so it’s important we build him up in a safe way."If we push him too hard he can get muscle injuries, so we’ve got to try and stick to the plan and there’s a plan for every individual player, but it was great to have Locks out there.”

  • #PLStories- Luton chief anticipates his Hatters side will have a ‘different look’ for Seagulls opener #LUTONTOWNFC

Hatters boss Rob Edwards anticipates his Luton side that makes their Premier League debut against Brighton & Hove Albion in under a month’s time will look ‘very different’ to the one that earned a 1-1 draw with Ipswich Town at Colchester United on Tuesday night. With a number of first team players missing, including summer signings Marvelous Nakamba and Issa Kabore, plus Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu, Amari’i Bell, Reece Burke and Gabe Osho all sitting the match out, the Town chief included a number of young pros on the bench for their match against the Championship new boys. They still managed to earn a 1-1 draw courtesy of striker Carlton Morris’s second half penalty, as summing up the performance on the club’s official website, Edwards said: “The no injuries bit is important, it was a really difficult game and that is why we wanted to play them, because they are a good team and will cause a lot of problems this year in the Championship.Chiedozie Ogbene won Luton a penalty during their 1-1 draw against Ipswich“That’s why we wanted that style of game because that's what we're going to come up against probably times 10 going forward."We are starting to push one or two, a few people got 90 minutes and we started to push the minutes up.“Some of the new players are getting a feel of what we are about more, which is good, so there were positives there."There’s lots to work on, I have to stress that straight away, lots to do."I’ve just said to the lads, it’s not to sound negative, but that is a very different look team to what I anticipate us being in a couple of weeks time.“The group will remain very similar, but there's going to be some changes.“We’ve got some work to do, I’ve got some work to do on the grass.“We have to be a bit better with our decision making."I thought in the first half, in terms of how we went about it out of possession we could have been better, which is down to me.“So bits to work on, but there were plenty of positives.”Edwards was pleased to see his summer additions in action in front of fans for the first time, as Mads Andersen, Tahith Chong and Chiedozie Ogbene all earned some valuable game time.It was Ogbene who won the penalty for Morris to find the net after a surge into the box was ended by a foul, with Edwards adding: “It was a little bit different for Mads, I wanted to have a look at him on the outside of that back three without having Gabe and Burkey, or Amari’i as well."It was important for him to experience that and I thought he also did well when he went back into the middle when Locks came off.“Chongy, the supporters can see very, very busy, very intelligent, wants to try and get on the ball, wants to try and make things happen."He’s very good in transition, he’s got athleticism, we saw that from the counter attack when he ran the length of the pitch and created a good chance."I thought Chieo when he moved upfront was beginning to look a real threat, starting to get in behind, gave us a little bit of a different dimension, he won us the penalty, so an important moment."It’s really good for them to get out there in front of fans with our lads, so that was a big plus for us, but lots more learning to do.”With Sheffield Wednesday now coming up in another friendly on Saturday, Edwards added: “There’s a number of players back at the Brache who have been working hard, not quite ready for minutes, but hopefully we’ll see Amari’i, hopefully we’ll see Issa, hopefully we can see Marv, which is great."One or two have got some knocks, Gabe, Burkey and Pelly, so we’ll see how they are going into the weekend.”

And the head coach admitted it was just what his players needed ahead of the 2023-24 domestic campaign. "I'm really happy, really delighted for the performances, for the result, for the quality of play," De Zerbi told the club website. "It was a very tough game but we knew before the game Brentford is a very good team. "And we need this game to prepare the start of the Premier League." Albion took the lead when Ivorian winger Adingra brought down Jason Steele's long pass with a superb touch before beating Bees keeper Mark Flekken. And after Frank Onyeka and Keane Lewis-Potter missed good chances to level, Adingra doubled Albion's tally just before the hour, curling home a shot from Steven Alzate's pass. De Zerbi praised the 21-year-old, adding: "I know the quality of Adingra, he's another big player for us. "I think we are building a very strong team, with many players in every position of the pitch for competition. "We have to be ready to change many players every three days.Adingra, Ferguson, Enciso they are very young. Discussing the move with afcb.co.uk, Kerkez shared: “It's a really warm welcome and I'm really happy and delighted to be here, also my family's, so I'm really, really happy. “We got in touch with Bournemouth and I feel the kind of respect the club and the people showed us, really, that was the big part of me coming here, so was a few busy days, but now that I'm finally here, I'm really happy and excited.”Born in what is now Serbia but opting to play for Hungary internationally, Kerkez believes all young footballers dream of playing in the Premier League. He continued: “It was a big decision, but really, since I was a kid, I believe everyone dreams of playing in the best league in the world. “That’s the Premier League and to have opportunity to come to a club like Bournemouth is a big thing. So I'm really, really happy to be here. “Like I said, really, the respect that me and my family got, really from Bournemouth, the people, they came to visit us at home to talk to us about the project, about the plan, and that was the big thing for me and my family to decide to come here.” Cherries swapped head coaches in June, with rookie boss Gary O’Neil dismissed when highly-rated Andoni Iraola became available. LONG READ: AFC Bournemouth moving away from pragmatism towards ideals with Iraola Iraola’s style of play was another big part of Kerkez’s decision to join Cherries. He restarted: “The coach has a big impact on my move to come here. “He comes from the Spanish League, so also, his philosophy, I like it. “The club's philosophy, his philosophy, I love it. “And that's what makes me come here now.”

Luton boss Rob Edwards believes the permanent signing of Marvelous Nakamba 'speaks volumes' for the ambitions of the Hatters this season. The acquisition of the 29-year-old, on a three deal, something the club don’t usually publicise, represents a fantastic piece of business from the Town board.Although the Zimbabwean international cost Aston Villa £11m in 2019, and still had 12 months to run on what was a lucrative deal at Villa Park, Luton have been able to persuade him to make Kenilworth Road his home, as they prepare for their first ever season in the Premier League.Discussing his latest addition, Edwards told the club’s official website: “A massive thank you to Gary (Sweet, CEO) and the board, they’ve worked so hard on this, and to Aston Villa for making it happen.“It’s a huge statement for the club going forward."To bring in a player of his quality on a permanent transfer speaks volumes of where this football club is going, how ambitious we are and where we intend to go."We want to keep moving forward, it’s really exciting times and Marv is another addition, together with the ones we brought in, that I think are really going to improve us.”Marvelous Nakamba enjoys Luton's promotion to the Premier League at Wembley - pic: Alex Pantling/Getty ImagesGoing into more detail on just how good the midfielder was during his stint with the Hatters, he added: “We, the supporters, the board, the staff and the players, all fell in love with Marv for what he gave us."Not just his work ethic, but his humility."He’s so unassuming; he just slotted in from day one and it felt like he had been at Luton for 10 years.“I think he felt that love. The hard-working midfielder has featured in both friendly matches under new boss Andoni Iraola so far. He played 90 minutes in the 4-0 win over Hibernian, before again starting and playing the first half of Sunday’s 1-0 loss to Maccabi Tel Aviv. Christie has previously expressed how settled he feels on the south coast of England, becoming a dad for the first time last month. Asked if there has been any dialogue with the club regarding his future and current contract situation, Christie told the Daily Echo: “No discussions yet, but I’m more than happy (here). “Especially with the baby now, I love living in Bournemouth. It’s a great place to stay and my family is nice and settled as well. “I’m not really thinking about that right now. Obviously the pre-season is pretty tough, so you just need to get the head down and keep working hard. “My main hope is to impress the new boss as much as I can. “If that leads to talks about a new contract, so be it. I’ll be looking forward to that hopefully.” Christie and his fiancée Georgie welcomed a baby boy into the world last month. For Christie, that capped off a busy summer, which had seen him away representing Scotland just five days before his son was born. “It was absolutely amazing, to be fair,” he said, discussing his new arrival. “It was obviously a bit of a whirlwind when he came, but I think we kind of timed it perfectly. “I got back from Scotland camp and two days later we went into labour. “It was nice because I got two weeks at the end of my break just in the house with him getting used to baby life.” Christie’s final game before returning home was the bizarre Euro 2024 qualifier against Georgia at Hampden Park. The Highlander was introduced for the closing stages of the 2-0 win, coming onto the pitch at 11.16pm after the game had been delayed due to wet weather in Glasgow. “That was one of the strangest games I’ve been a part of,” Christie admitted. “The rain was absolutely mental and then there was talk of the game being postponed and playing the next morning. “I think everybody was desperate just to get the game done, especially me with a pregnant fiancée at home, waiting for me to get home. So I was watching the clock half the night! “The most important thing is we got a win to round off another very successful camp for us.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola wants commitment and involvement from Cherries squad #AFCB

Iraola is into his third full week working with his Cherries squad, having replaced Gary O’Neil as head coach this summer. The Spaniard has taken charge of two matches, during a 10-day training camp in Marbella. Cherries eased to a 4-0 victory over Hibernian, before being beaten 1-0 by Maccabi Tel Aviv. Iraola and his squad are now back in the UK and face three more friendlies before the Premier League gets underway, starting at Southampton on Tuesday. Asked what the main attribute he wants from his players is, Iraola said: “We need commitment especially. “The way we want to play, we need everyone involved. Everyone involved offensively and everyone involved defensively. “That’s one of the things I like more about the players we have. “I think the forward players who played last season, they were really committed. They didn’t give up, they were not one less without the ball and we want to maintain this because we start from there and if everyone is committed, we can survive better.” He added: “Our ideas are more collective. Each player has his own individual things to do but what I do for my team that makes my teammates better, how can I help my team, that’s what I want my players to think.”

Foster joined the Clarets from Belgian outfit Westerlo in the January window and was on target in the 3-0 win against Wigan in March. The 22-year-old struggled with his mental health after leaving South Africa to pursue a career in Europe. In a brave interview with radio station MSW, Foster spoke about one of his darkest points while playing for Westerlo. “I was in my apartment all by myself. I realised I just felt this huge sense of loneliness,” he said. “I felt like I couldn’t really express myself with all of my team-mates. It was a lot more difficult to be around them and do things footballers are supposed to do. “I just used to try and go to training, play games and honestly the best thing to do at that time of my life was to go back home and sleep. There was no real excitement or looking forward to anything. “That’s when I realised I was in some trouble and I panicked a little bit. I didn’t know what was going on or how to deal with it because it was the first time I was in a position like that.” Foster admitted he had even considered taking his own life at his lowest point. Thankfully, the young forward is in a much better place now and says he wakes up “grateful” every day. He hailed Burnley assistant Craig Bellamy – who has also opened up about his own mental health battles in the past – for his support. “I’ve got heaps of support. I’ve got family and friends who love me for who I am and that’s more that any human can ask for,” he added. “The position I’m in as a Burnley player, to be preparing for my first season in the Premier League is something I have dreamed of my whole life. “I'm smiling again. I’m happy to be around my team-mates and happy to be on the field. “Thanks to the coach, Craig, who has been a massive help and the club as a whole, who have opened up and spoken to me about it. “They have helped me tremendously and have my best interests at heart. I wake up every day grateful, ready to go to training and give my best.”

Tom Lockyer hailed his ‘unbelievable relationship’ with the Hatters fans after agreeing a new contract to remain with the club for what will be their debut season in the Premier League this term. The 28-year-old centre half was a massive reason behind Town making it to the top flight for the first time in over 30 years, with some absolutely magnificent displays at the heart of Luton's defence last season, seeing him quite rightly named in the division’s Team of the Year. However, he then suffered an on-field collapse at Wembley in the early stages of the play-off final with Coventry City, immediately taken to hospital. It was from there he had to watch Luton secure a 6-5 penalty shootout victory, as he was kept in for five days to have an operation to correct an atrial fibrillation, which meant he missed the open top bus parade and celebrations at St George’s Square too.Lockyer’s social media was flooded with message of support from Town’s fans, who he was eager to thank when announcing he had re-signed, as speaking to the club’s official Twitter page, he said: “Absolutely gutted that I couldn’t be there to celebrate with you all at the end of last season, but I can’t thank you all enough for all the messages you sent me, it means so much to me and my family."Sat in the back of the ambulance van, I was worried that I was never going to be able to play again, so I’m absolutely delighted to announce that I’ll be staying on at Luton Town.“Ever since I’ve come to this football club I’ve had an unbelievable relationship with the fans, it makes my spine tingle every time I hear my name sung and I can’t wait to hear that again.”Luton defender Tom Lockyer celebrates scoring in front of the Hatters fansNow beginning his fourth season at Kenilworth Road, and with 101 appearances under his belt, Lockyer is looking to remain with the club for the long term, adding: “I’d really like to build something special here at Luton Town."I’ve got an incredible relationship with the fans, the manager, all the boys.“I love the club and I love being here."It’s incredible what we achieved last season."To have the chance to play with Luton in the Premier League will be something that’s really special to me.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola reveals his playing style for Bournemouth team #AFCB

The high-pressing, intense, front-footed approach has been likened to that his former boss Marcelo Bielsa instilled at Leeds United. In taking Rayo Vallecano up from the second tier of Spanish football to two consecutive seasons finishing mid-table in La Liga, upsetting the biggest teams along the way, Iraola’s style has caught the eye. It ultimately led to Cherries pulling the trigger on Gary O’Neil, despite being happy with the job he was doing. An in-demand Iraola, out of contract and available, was just too good of an opportunity to miss. By pundits and former players, his tactical style has been labelled ‘organised chaos’ and ‘rock and roll football’. The 41-year-old Spaniard was presented to the media for the first time this week and his performance during the half-an-hour press conference could not have been much further from the style many are expecting to see his Cherries team play. Despite not speaking in his first language, Iraola oozed calmness, confidence and control over the room of both local and national journalists. His bosses were also in attendance with Neill Blake, Richard Hughes, Simon Francis and Jim Frevola all watching on for the start of the press call. Iraola dignified every question with a perfectly reasonable answer, but refused to be drawn into any outlandish, headline-grabbing comments, particularly when pushed on his relationship with fellow Premier League bosses Mikel Arteta, Unai Emery or Eddie Howe. There was a humility to Iraola’s tone. Yes, he is now a Premier League head coach, operating amongst peers widely considered to be the best in the world. But with his only previous managerial experience coming with AEK Larnaca, Mirandes and Rayo Vallecano, Iraola insisted he could not yet be classed in the same bracket as other top bosses in the country. “I hope I can be at the level,” he said. As well as fielding many questions about fellow Premier League coaches, the topic often reverted back to style of play. While he cut a controlled figure in the media suite at Vitality Stadium, a few yards away on the pitch itself, he hopes to see a different story from his players. We will get a first glimpse of his new side in action, in a friendly against Hibernian in Marbella next week. But given how he explained his plans and tactical ideals on Wednesday, we already have a good idea of what we are likely to see. Asked if his style could be described as ‘chaos but fun’, Iraola replied: “I don’t like the games to be too controlled. “If you are on the ball for 30 seconds, then they are on the ball for one minute, I prefer, even if we are not so clinical, so sharp, we try to attack as soon as we can. “We open the game. We have a good volume of crosses, of chances. When you want to play high, when you want to arrive, sometimes you will suffer at the back. “But you have to be ready. I think we have good defenders also. We have to stay compact, even if we are high, we are low. “I don’t want to use these words you talked about!” Last season Cherries had the third worst defensive record in the league, conceding 71, not helped by considerably the worst record at defending set pieces. Asked how he plans to fix that, whilst balancing the style of play he is looking to implement, Iraola explained: “Sometimes we make the mistake to think if we play high, you are worse defensively. “My idea is exactly the opposite. I want to play high so the number of chances (against us) is lower. The volume of set pieces we have to defend is lower. So at the end the numbers will be better. “Normally when you analyse the games it looks like it is risky, but I do not agree with this. “It is true that sometimes if you play high and if the timing is good, you can give away a one against one against your keeper. “But they are the things we have to control, we have to work on. “I feel as a coach on the outside safer when we are far from our box than the opposite.” Some of Iraola’s ideas do cross over into what O’Neil was working on improving during his spell in charge. Certain games saw Cherries try to regain the ball high up the pitch, whilst also playing direct to pacy wingers. Quizzed on whether it will take time for the players to adapt to the methods Iraola is looking to implement, the Basque-born boss said: “Always when you arrive to a place it will take some time. “But we would like also to maintain a lot of things that the team was doing. “I think at the end last season, the team finished in a good position, for a team that was recently promoted. But we’ve come with our own ideas, we have some games during pre-season to try to implement these ideas, to try to improve and that’s what we are doing right now. “We still don’t have the international players, they will arrive at the end of the week. “I want to start working with all the group so we can start the tactical side. “The first week has been more about the physical side, because we don’t have a lot of players. “Next week we will start thinking more about our tactical idea.” Cherries head for a 10-day training camp in Marbella on Friday.

  • #PLStories- Luton boss Rob Edwards confirms popular Tom Lockyer will remain for the Hatters #LUTONTOWNFC

Luton boss Rob Edwards labelled the news that Tom Lockyer will be part of Town’s Premier League squad this season after signing a new contract this morning as a 'huge signing' for the HattersThe 28-year-old is a massive favourite with Town's fans following his stellar displays in the centre of defence last term, in what was a quite magnificent season for both himself personally and the team, as they reached the top flight by winning the play-offs.There had been some speculation the Welsh international’s form had seen him interesting other sides after becoming a free agent once his deal ran out in the summer. However, they have proved to be unsubstantiated, with Lockyer putting pen to paper this morning to extend his stint with the club into what will now be his fourth seasonSpeaking to the club’s official website, Edwards said: “This is a really important signing for us."The supporters saw the best of Tom, and I thought his consistency was second to none – and that’s up there in the whole league."That was why he was in the Team of the Season, why he won loads of awards and why we achieved the special thing that we achieved.Luton's players hold up Tom Lockyer's shirt at Wembley“He was a huge part of it, not just the blocks, the clean sheets, the leadership."He even chipped in with goals, and important ones as well, none more so than in the semi-final."There is no question he is a huge signing for us."Lockyer worryingly saw his play-off final against Coventry City at Wembley ended after collapsing on the pitch during the opening 10 minutes, as he was immediately taken to hospital. He spent five days in hospital, undergoing an operation to correct an atrial fibrillation, but thankfully Edwards confirmed he is now back to full health and ready to go for what will be his first ever season as a Premier League player. He added: “Of course, after Wembley his health was the main thing, and that’s where all our thoughts went to straight away after the final whistle."It was brilliant that we were able to see him sitting up and celebrating in the hospital, just a shame he couldn’t be there with us.“But within a week or two he was back up and about feeling really positive, had every check that was possible so our medical side were really happy with everything.“It was a really scary moment, we all know that, but the main thing is he is okay and ready to crack on with us into the Premier League and we’re all so happy about that.”

  • #PLStories- Reece Burke and Rob Edwards highlight importance after player signs new deal to remain a Hatter #LUTONTownFC

Luton defender Reece Burke is determined to stay fit and play a big part in the Hatters’ first ever Premier League campaign this season after signing a new deal at Kenilworth Road. The 25-year-old has played 57 times for the Hatters since joining on a free from Hull City in 2021, but has never been able to get a run of more than six consecutive league starts due to various injuries picked up along the way.He featured in 22 Championship fixtures last term, beginning five games in a row on two occasions, which is something he desperately wants to improve with Town in the top flight once more.Reece Burke in action for Luton during the play-off final at Wembley - pic: Richard Heathcote/Getty ImagesSpeaking to the club’s official website, Burke said: “I’m absolutely delighted."I’m grateful to have another opportunity, buzzing to continue my journey here."It’s been two successful years here, the first season we got in the play-offs and didn’t get promoted but in the second season we did go up.“Wembley was the best day of my life in football, so I’m really delighted to stay."Personally, last year was difficult for me in terms of injuries, my main focus this time is to stay fit and try to do well."When I’m fit, I play well so I know I’ve got more to give.“I just enjoy coming into training every day, we’ve got a great team, great staff, great fans, I like everything about this club, so it was a no brainer really.”Luton boss Rob Edwards is confident that the former West Ham centre half can stay fit on a consist basis too, as he said: “I think he’s a really good player and a really important player for us, so I’m delighted that he’s agreed a contract extension because when he’s fit, him and Gabe (Osho) is a right good battle for that position.“I know now the big thing for him will be consistently staying fit and consistently playing, but I know he’s capable of it.“He’s got energy and from that right-sided position he can be really brave."He’ll bomb on, he’ll overlap, he’ll put crosses in, he’ll be aggressive in defensive situations.“He’s a brilliant bloke who is another one who is just a bit frustrated because he needs that run of games and then just feels little niggles, but he worked so, so hard to get himself fit for the play-off games."The medical team did brilliant with him to get him right, and he’d have been disappointed not to be playing in the final, but he came on and he was incredible.”Whenever Burke did play, he showed the hallmarks of the player who came through the ranks at Upton Park, going on to make six top flight appearances for the Hammers and then costing Hull £1.5m in 2018.On the bench at Wembley for the play-off final with Coventry, the centre half was on far earlier than anyone would have expected, himself included, replacing Tom Lockyer after the Welsh international collapsed on the pitch inside the opening 10 minutes.Despite playing just over a half of first team football in the month building up to the showpiece event, Burke excelled from the moment he came on, helping to restrict Sky Blues' star striker Viktor Gyokeres to very little in terms of clear-cut chances, as Luton drew 1-1, then winning on penalties to reach the top division in English football for the first time in over 30 years. On his display, Edwards said: “I thought his mentality to come on so early, in difficult circumstances when Locks went off when he did, to come into that, the biggest game of all of our careers, and perform as he did against really tough opposition, just says everything you need to know about him.“He’s another one, when you think about his goal away at Huddersfield on New Year’s Day, he got three wins in a row for us and it was a really important goal."But his performances, whenever he did play, were excellent."Even in a game we lost, Burnley at home, I thought he was magnificent.”Meanwhile, Burke added: “Over the last two seasons, the best moment would be Wembley."I came on so early in the game, but I did well and that feeling when we won was unreal."It’s so hard to describe but it’s my best day in football for me.”

The 28-year-old was one of the Hatters’ big signings of the summer, as a proven Championship goalscorer while at Barnsley, he returned to the place it all started, to add much-needed striking competition alongside Elijah Adebayo and record addition Carlton Morris.Under Nathan Jones, Woodrow only started two league games, used primarily off the bench, more often than not in a deeper role as well, before a calf injury kept him out for two months.Hatters forward Cauley Woodrow applauds the Town supportersOnce Jones departed, he then scored a stoppage time winner for new boss Rob Edwards during his first home game in charge, a wonderful effort against Norwich City to seal the 2-1 victory. However, the attacker still struggled to break the partnership of Adebayo and Morris, making just three more starts in the second half of the campaign, although did score in the FA Cup success at Wigan Athletic.Woodrow did begin back-to-back matches, netting in the 2-0 success at Rotherham, as he was starting to impose himself when another injury struck in the 1-1 draw with Reading. That ruled him out of the play-offs and Wembley win over Coventry City as well, but he has still done enough to earn a new contract under Edwards, as Woodrow himself felt he had a role in Town's promotion to the top flight, after his 32 outings in total.Speaking to the club’s official website, he said: “It was an unbelievable season."When I signed in the summer and spoke to Gary Sweet and everyone at the club, promotion was the goal.“So to achieve it in your first season was amazing, and for everyone collectively it was an unbelievable achievement and something that everyone at the football club should be really proud of.“A lot of fans might say that I didn’t play as much as I’d have wanted to, but I had two injuries which came at bad times for me."I like to think that over the course of the season though, like everyone had their part to play, at times I had mine too.“I was involved in over 30 games and the club has put their faith in me by offering me a new contract, which I’m absolutely delighted about.”Reflecting on the goal against Norwich, he continued: “For everyone at the football club, especially the fans at the Kenny, beating a big club like Norwich on Boxing Day was a big moment with it being Rob, Trolls (Paul Trollope) and Richie's (Kyle) first home game."I think the celebrations that day – everyone together – was probably a moment that pushed us on."From then on we just went from strength to strength."The lads were on fire, everything clicked into place.”Meanwhile, like the rest of the squad, Woodrow now can’t wait to get going for Luton’s first season in the top flight for over 30 years, as he added: “Working with the manager and the new members of staff since they came in, even though I haven’t played as much as I’d like to, I’ve absolutely loved every minute of coming in and being a part of it and I can't wait to get going again on Thursday.“I know I’ve only been back here a year, but it is home for me."I live 20 minutes away, my family are close to me, I absolutely love the football club and the people in it."I couldn’t be happier to be back playing for Luton Town.”

  • #PLStories- Rob Edwards credits Cauley Woodrow for kickstarting his reign as Luton boss following Canaries winner #LUTONTOWNFC

Luton boss Rob Edwards credited striker Cauley Woodrow with getting his reign in charge of the Hatters ‘going' after the forward penned a new contract at Kenilworth Road this afternoon. The 28-year-old hadn’t featured in the new manager’s first game in charge, a 2-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in December, but was introduced from the bench on Boxing Day in the home fixture against Norwich City with four minutes remaining, the Hatters drawing 1-1 but down to 10 men following Gabe Osho’s red card.In a flash, the ex-Town youngster had given the hosts a maiden three points of Edwards’ tenure, and a first home win for over two months, taking Jordan Clark’s pass in his stride and cracking a terrific effort into the top corner.Cauley Woodrow celebrates his winner against Norwich City on Boxing DayIt was the start of a run of three victories in a row for Luton and began a run of consistently impressive form which saw Town eventually reach the Premier League for the first time in their history via the play-offs.Although his role was limited, starting just three more league games and scoring once more in the Championship, that against Rotherham United, injury forcing him out of the final stages of the campaign, on Woodrow’s impact, Edwards said: “Cauley has had a frustrating time since we came in."When we arrived he was just coming back from injury and worked extremely hard to get himself fit.“He may not have been starting matches, but he was coming on a lot as the first sub to be introduced and was always very important, whether we were winning or losing games.“Looking back, Cauley arguably scored the most important goal after we came in, which was against Norwich at home on Boxing Day."Down to ten men, we went for it and put him on and thankfully he did what we know he can do.“He scored a brilliant goal and I think that really got the whole thing going for us."A home win, the first for a while – it got a lot of belief going and helped create a connection between us and the supporters."It really helped us, so Cauley played a huge part in us building momentum.“He still chipped in with goals, but it was his all-round play, his work-rate, which again we know that we need, that’s what we are about.“I thought he was excellent when he started against Rotherham and Reading, but unfortunately he hurt himself again, and although he tried really hard to come back for the play-off semi-final, he then broke down again which ruled him out for the final."Woodrow will now be looking to add to his six top flight outings managed when at Fulham, whom he joined from Luton as a teenager, plus his tally of one Premier League goal, that when scoring against Crystal Palace in May 2014.Edwards added: “He’s a local lad and he’s had a little bit of Premier League experience in the past with Fulham, so he’ll be desperate to try and get some more."He’ll be someone who will be very hungry now to come back, try and impress and show what he’s about.“He’s a brilliant human being as well."I love seeing him around the place, always smiling, always gives everything, so I’m really pleased that he’s agreed to extend his contract with us.”

  • #PLStories- Asmir Begovic on Mark Travers losing place to Neto #AFCB

Travers enjoyed a stellar campaign in 2021-22, scooping a host of individual awards for his efforts in helping Cherries clinch promotion to the Championship. He then started last season as Cherries’ first choice, before Gary O’Neil took the reins and instantly took him out of the side, bringing in experienced new signing Neto in his place. The Brazilian would go on to become club captain, restricting Travers to just 15 club appearances in all competitions last season. Speaking to the Daily Echo following the final-day loss at Everton, where Travers featured for the first time in more than four months, the Irishman admitted it had been a "very tough" season personally adding: “I know I want to play every week and at my age, I don’t want to be not playing.” Prior to his spell as first choice in 2021-22, Travers played second fiddle to Begovic, before the Bosnian departed to join Everton. Discussing Travers losing his place last season, Begovic told BBC Radio Solent: “First and foremost, Neto has been fantastic. “Obviously a top-level goalkeeper, who has played at the highest level for many, many years. “Of course for Trav it’s an experience, it’s part of development. “There’s going to be ups and downs in football, there’s no doubt about it. It’s never smooth sailing, that’s for sure. “He’s maybe dealing with a bit of a different experience now after having the games over the year previous to that. “I’m sure he’ll take stock in the summer and see what he wants to do and I’m sure the club will as well. “They’ve got a fantastic goalkeeper coach in Neil Moss and his staff. So they’ll all put a plan together for his development and make sure he keeps going in the right direction. “But it’s part of a goalkeeper’s life and a professional footballer’s life. There’s ups and downs and you have to take them all in your stride, deal with them in the best way possible.” Travers was dropped by O’Neil following the 9-0 humiliation against Liverpool in the fourth league game of the season. Reflecting on that decision to leave Travers out for the next game against Wolves, before he was sacked and replaced by Andoni Iraola last week, O’Neil told the Daily Echo: “Conceding nine as a goalkeeper, he was not at fault for too many. But then to be taken out after that and it’s not the season he would have wanted, I’m sure. “But he’s trained with real professionalism. I’ve had a real comfort in the fact I know Trav can come in if he’s needed, because of the way he works and the way he is around the group. “A difficult day for me as well that day (at Anfield). “As an interim head coach to have a day and a half to prepare for Wolves and have to make a call on last year’s player of the season and the number one goalie, to take him out wasn’t an easy conversation for me to have with Trav, who I obviously have a fantastic relationship with. “I’m extremely grateful to Trav. “Whether he feels like he had a big impact on the season or not, because he hasn’t played much, but his impact around the group and the way he’s held himself and behaved since that disappointment definitely helped the group manage to get over the line.”

  • #PLStories- Andoni Iraola outlines style he wants to bring to AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

The Spaniard, who credits Marcelo Bielsa as an influence for the way he coaches, has become well-known for his teams playing high-pressing football, particularly during his recent successful stint with Rayo Vallecano in Spain. Asked what he is looking to implement as new boss of Cherries, Iraola told afcbTV: “We want to be an efficient team. “For me, a lot of times to be efficient is to play as close to their box as we can. Probably we will play a little bit higher up the pitch. “We want to be direct, to try to maximise our offensive volume. Obviously we have to defend, we have to be ready to defend sometimes in a low block, because we will be forced. “But our main idea will be to play as much as we can in their half. “I hope you are happy. I think we have the work-rate, especially from our front players, that they can sustain the press. “They can make us play as high as we can, so we are closer when we regain possession to their goal. But we have a lot of work to do. We have to implement everything and the players also have to buy the idea. “I think from the first impressions I have, talking to some players, they are used to working. “They are used to training hard and we will need it. “Sometimes the coach has to be demanding, but it is our job. I think the players are ready for it.” He added: “I want to start training, I want to start knowing the players. Because it is one thing to watch the players on video, then you don’t really know the player. “You have to look at the small details, how they train, how they understand the game, tactically how good they are. “We don’t have so much time, but I think it is enough to get prepared for the first game against West Ham.”

  • #PLStories- Rob Edwards hopes Town’s leading marksman Morris can transfer his Championship form to the Premier League #COYH

Luton boss Rob Edwards hopes leading marksman Carlton Morris can transfer his goalscoring form from the Championship into the Premier League this term. The 27-year-old, who penned a new deal this evening, scored 20 times for the Hatters as they reached the play-off final at Wembley, beating Coventry 6-5 on penalties to take their place in the top flight once more.Morris became the first Luton attacker to reach such a personal milestone in the second tier since legendary forward Brian Stein back in the 1981-82 season, as he will now be aiming to cause some of the best defenders in the world a host of problems when the season begins on August 12. Speaking to the club’s official website, Edwards said: “We’re so pleased to get someone as important to us as Carlton signed on for even longer."He’s a brilliant person to have in our squad.“His goals were influential last season, but whenever I spoke about him or was asked about him, it was his all-round game and what he brought to the team, whether it was hold-up play, work-rate, headers, defensive headers in his own box from corners."It was everything that he gave the team, as well as the goal threat.Carlton Morris looks to beat a Coventry defender at Wembley“He’s got great experience now, but he’s a good age, someone who is really hungry, and he deserves the opportunity now to have a go in the Premier League.“If you look over the last ten years-plus, there have been a lot of strikers that have done well in the Championship, stepped up and then have gone and done well in the Premier League as well, and let’s hope Carlton is one of them.”Despite picking up a number of minor niggles last term, and being on the end of a horrific tackle from Birmingham City’s Marc Roberts, Morris still registered 51 appearances for the Hatters. That resilience certainly impressed Edwards, who added: “He played through a lot of pain last season, he didn’t want to miss a minute."He’s a proper leader, he’s got a voice and people respect him."The fans love him, we love him – he knows that – and I think he responds well to that as well.“He knows how important he is, but he goes and puts it all out there every day in training."He goes over that white line on a Saturday, or any matchday now, and he’s right at it and a handful for anyone."We’re delighted to have him as our handful for the long-term.”

  • #PLStories- Justin Kluivert on Premier League ambitions at AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

Kluivert joined Cherries on Friday for a reported initial £9.5million, arriving from Roma. The Dutchman has penned a long-term contract with the club, which is believed to run until 2028. Asked what he hopes to achieve with Cherries in that time, Kluivert told afcbTV: “My hopes and ambitions are just to be very important for the club. “I want to be that type of player. And just to do my best and give my all. “I know what my abilities are and I want to show that for the club and for the fans. I can’t wait. “To be honest, everybody knows it’s the best league in the world. “This is the dream, to play in the Premier League. That’s why I’m really excited to get started. “I’m looking forward to it.” Kluivert, 24, already has plenty of varied experience, playing in the top league of five European countries with spells at Ajax, Leipzig, Nice and Valencia, as well as Roma. “I’ve just turned 24 and I’ve learned a lot from my career already,” he said. “It is actually just the beginning and I’ve already been through a lot. “So I’m very happy that I’ve been through all of that and it will help me in my future, I know for sure. “I speak to people who say it looks like you’ve been 24 for 10 years! I say yes, I have been in the game since I was very young and I’m still quite young. “I can’t wait to get started and show my qualities here in this league for years to come.” Netherlands international Kluivert is the son of former Barcelona and Newcastle United striker Patrick Kluivert, one of his country’s all-time leading goalscorers. Significantly shorter than his father, Justin has played most of his football out on the wings, using his pace and tricky to score and create goals. Quizzed on what type of player Cherries fans will see, Kluivert said: “They can expect a player who is willing to do everything for the team, to attack. “I guess I could say I run quite fast! My mind is to score goals and be important for the team, also in the defensive area.” He added: “I am very delighted (to sign). “I’m part of the family right now and I can’t wait to get to know the teammates and the new coach also. I can’t wait to get started.”

  • #PLStories- Lewis Cook assesses his Premier League season with AFC Bournemouth #AFCB

Cook is one of Cherries’ longest-serving players, having joined the club from Leeds United in the summer of 2016. Two serious knee injuries have restricted the availability of the one-time England international during his time in Dorset. In his seven years at Cherries, Cook has racked up 180 appearances, scoring two goals and last summer signed a contract extension which runs until 2025. The 26-year-old played a key role in the first half of last season, starting 16 Premier League games in succession, before injury saw him forced off during defeat at Brentford in January. Cook would be unavailable for the next five league games, with Joe Rothwell excelling in his place. When fit again, Cook would still find game-time hard to come by, with Rothwell, Philip Billing and Jefferson Lerma featuring more regularly in midfield. The York-born talent ended the campaign having made 31 appearances in league and cup. Asked for his reflections on the season, Cook told the Daily Echo: “I had a spell out, but it’s not as long as I’ve had in the past. “Playing 30-something games, in the best league in the world, I can’t complain at all. “I’ve really enjoyed it and am just looking forward to next year.” Discussing his lack of game-time from March onwards, Cook added: “The lads have been playing unbelievable. “We can’t complain with having this many points four games before the end of the season. “It’s part of football. Whoever has got the shirt is going to try and keep it. “It’s my job to try and keep training, keep working hard and keep enjoying my football to try and get back in. “But it’s part of football and we’re definitely all in this together. “I think the lads played a big part in the season, whether it be the start, the middle, or the end. We’re a big team and we’re together, definitely.” Cook will be hoping for another new lease of life under new boss Andoni Iraola, when he joins the rest of his teammates for pre-season testing on Saturday, July 1. Cherries will then train in England, before heading off to Marbella for a warm weather training camp. During that spell, they will face friendlies against Scottish outfit Hibernian (July 13) and Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv (July 16). Cherries will then return home, welcoming Atalanta (July 29) and FC Lorient (August 5) to Vitality Stadium before the Premier League campaign gets underway at home against West Ham United seven days later.

  • #PLStories- Hatters defender Gabe Osho backs Luton to ‘surprise’ a few in the Premier League #LUTONFC

Defender Gabe Osho is confident that Luton can ‘surprise’ a few when they begin their Premier League campaign in just under two months. The Hatters will be taking their place among the big boys next term after winning a nerve-jangling Championship play-off final penalty shootout with Coventry City at Wembley to reach the top flight recently.Although Town will be everyone's favourites to get relegated before a ball has even been kicked, Osho believes that with a raucous Kenilworth Road behind them, and a continuation of their excellent form on the road, Luton losing just four away games all season, they will be able to shock some of their opponents during the campaign ahead.Town centre half Gabe Osho - pic: Getty ImagesHe said: “It’s going to be some ride."It will be difficult of course, I think everyone’s aware of that, no-one thinks it’s going to be an easy ride, but Kenilworth Road is going to be different for many, many Premier League teams to come to."If we can make that a fortress, then we have a really, really good chance of staying up."Our away form last season was really good in the Championship as well, so I think we’re going to surprise a lot of teams.”Although Osho is aware of just what a force Town's home support will be, he doesn’t want that to detract from how a good footballing side Luton have become, particularly since Rob Edwards took over in November. He added: “It’s interesting as we know the stadium is a big talking point, but I don’t think a lot gets made of how we actually play."I think that’s going to surprise a couple of teams when we come up against them.“Everyone’s kind of expecting a tight changing room, this and that, but when we actually get on the pitch and play the football we know we can play, it’s going to surprise teams and pick up points where we’re not expected to.”

  • #PLStories- Evan Ferguson reveals ‘mad’ season with Brighton and Ireland #BHAFC

The Albion striker will spend time in his hometown and get a holiday after rounding off his breakthrough campaign with his first goal in a competitive international. He headed in a perfect James McClean cross before family and friends in Dublin to help the Republic of Ireland beat Gibraltar 3-0 in a Euro 2024 qualifier. It was his second goal for his country to go with 16 for Albion in all competitions this term, of which six were for the under-21s. Ferguson said: “It has been a good six months. “It has gone very quick but it’s a nice way to finish. “I have a bit of time now to relax and take it all in. “I’ll switch off for a few weeks and then we go straight back into it again. "It’s good to be back home. It’s nice to score, especially when it’s in front of family and friends.” Ferguson plans to catch up with familiar faces back home, then get away from it all ahead of pre-season with Albion. He said: “It is possible you will see me around Bettystown for a week, maybe two, and then I will be gone. “It's been a mad old season, it's gone quick but it's been good. I need to just switch off and get re-focused.”

  • #PLStories- AFC Bournemouth chairman Bill Foley on expectations for club #AFCB

Foley is slowly earning a reputation for his bold predictions coming true. Shortly after completing Black Knight’s takeover of Cherries, he “guaranteed” Cherries would avoid relegation, a claim that came true far sooner than his more audacious statement that his Vegas Golden Knights side would win ice hockey’s biggest prize in their first six years of existence. He was almost proven right one year in, when the Golden Knights reached the final, but Vegas did keep to his six-year schedule, defeating the Florida Panthers to lift the Stanley Cup last week. Foley shared: “I did do the prediction that we were not going to be relegated, that kind of made the rounds. “I got sick and tired of ‘well, you're going to be relegated. How do you possibly stay up? You're picked number 20,’ and I finally said, ‘we're not going to be relegated back in late December, I guarantee it.’ “And of course, that came back to haunt me for a while, but worked out we didn't get relegated.” At the time of his survival prediction, Foley also stressed how he wanted European football at the Vitality – but the Cherries chairman would not put an exact timeline on reaching continental competition. “We have perhaps more modest expectations. “Football is the greatest sport in the world, and the Premier League is the best football league in the world, and the competition is unbelievable. “So we ended up 15th. “We'll be doing some serious adds to our squad this summer and we have modest goals. “Let's see if we can't work our way to 13th, 12th, then maybe the next year 11th, 10th, then ninth, eighth and then maybe somehow we sneak in like a Brighton, and we do play European football. “It's a few years off so it's not going to happen just yet and we'll see how this team that we're putting together this summer supplements what we already have.” Foley then went on to explain how Cherries have already lined up potential targets. The Daily Echo understands personal terms have been agreed with last season’s loanee Matias Vina, whilst the club remain in negotiations with Roma over a fee for the left-back and winger Justin Kluivert. “We're talking to agents and talking to players and you can't make commitments just yet,” Foley continued. “It's supposed to be July 1, but we have a lot of people lined up that we're very interested in. “So my prospects for Bournemouth are very good and our prospects for our multi-club strategy is on track. “We have now one Ligue 1 club and we're working in Belgium. “We have some ideas about Spain and we don't need a bunch, need about three that we can send players to, they get their experience, they're playing all the time then they come back up to Bournemouth. “So we have a plan but it's going to be evolving.”
