Everton, were without a league match that weekend because of Sheffield United’s FA cup commitment were in search for opponents to keep their players occupied. Three of their fringe players, Jason Kearton, Stuart Barlow and Alan Harper were playing for reserves but most of the other players were in search for more game time to keep their fitness levels up. Everton had played on 24 March against Ipswich and was not set to play until 10th of April because of the international break and FA cup semi-finals.

Howard Kendall said “We are not having much luck at the moment. Most other clubs, both here and abroad are playing this weekend and so far we have been unable to find anyone. We did have a friendly in Jersey but it was a low key affair and we could really do to have another run out before our next league game in 10 days time, even if it is behind closed doors.”
