Howard Kendall was not to be panicked into spending the £2 million he received for Martin Keown – despite club’s plunge back into the danger zone. Kendall said “We are ideally placed to follow up good reports on players. But whatever money we eventually spend, we must believe it is the right thing to do,”

The pressure was mounting on the manager after another loss to Tottenham and the club dropping into the bottom three. The club had sold their star player Martin Keown to Arsenal, a move that had not gone down well with many sections of the supporters.
