Crystal Palace midfielder Gareth Southgate believed that Liverpool did his club huge favor in the 5-0 drubbing at Anfield a month ago. It prompted lowly Palace to ask searching questions of themselves, and results since had been little less than startling. Steve Coppell’s young side returned to Anfield in the cup game that they drew and followed it up with successive league victories against Sheffield United and QPR. Southgate said, “The 5-0 defeat was an embarrassment and has proved to be a turning point. A lot was said after that match and a few home truths emerged. It has all helped to clear the air.”
