In a double injury boost to Chelsea manager Ian Porterfield, the Republic of Ireland International Tony Cascarino was back in training after recovering from a knee injury sustained in the close season. The tall striker was set to challenge in form Mick Harford for a place in the first team and provide cover. John Spencer was also back in training following a hamstring injury but David Hopkins was still sidelined. Chelsea had already secured a half a million pound deal with CSKA Moscow for goalkeeper Dimitri Kharin and the squad was looking in a much better shape to fight for a European spot in the second half of the season.
