Leeds 0 – Norwich City 4 – Canaries Fly High after demolishing Leeds at Elland Road
Rampant Norwich condemner Leeds to only their second home league defeat in 28 months, to suggest the Canaries was again be among the leading contenders for honours that season. Man of the match Ruel Fox scored twice and played a leading part in the other two Norwich goals as the defensive errors that plagued Leeds last season returned to haunt them.
Tony Dorigo was responsible for mistakes which led to the first two goals. Jeremy Goss hit a spectacular third goal and Chris Sutton was the other player to get on the scoring sheet to punish the Leeds defence.
Wimbledon 2 – Aston Villa 2 – John Fashanu continues impressive form to rescue a point for Wimbledon
John Fashanu continued his rampaging start to the season with his third goal in three games as Wimbledon twice came from behind to get a point. Fashanu rose five minutes from time at the far post to bullet home a typical header from Alan Kimble’s cross. It was a goal he thoroughly deserved after an inspirational performance – but Villa threw away two points.
The visitors without Andy Townsend took control from the start and missed several chances before taking a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute via Kevin Richardson. Wimbledon levelled six minutes before the break. Paul Mcgrath got the faintest of touches at the near post from Steve Staunton’s corner to send the ball home before Fashanu rescued a point for the Dons.
Sheffield Wednesday 0 – Arsenal 1 – Gunners beat Wednesday, Again
Sheffield Wednesday must have felt stick to the stomach after losing two cup finals to Arsenal the season before and when they stole Arsenal’s march to sign Andy Sinton from QPR, Trevor Francis must have thought that the tide had turned. But it was all too familiar a scene when Arsenal visited Hillsborough to inflict another defeat on the owls.
Ian Wright scored the only goal of a game where despite a lot of attacking threat from both the sides, the final bit of quality was missing.
George Graham said “We passed the ball well. Especially in the first half and our build-up was a lot more patient.”
Trevor Francis said “We deserved to lose. We didn’t play anything like as well as we have done in the past couple of years.”
Everton 4 – Sheffield United – 2 – Tony Cottee inspires Everton fightback
A Tony Cottee hat trick helped Everton fight back from an early blunder against Sheffield United to preserve their 100% start to the campaign. The Merseysiders conceded their first goal of the season in the first minute but clawed their way back. Dane Whitehouse gave the lead to the visitors before Cottee inspired a fightback for the home side.
A remarkable second-half performance saw Everton race to a 3-1 lead before Alan Cork gave the visitors hope by scoring the second goal for Sheffield. But two minutes later in the injury time, Everton played a brilliant counter-attack for Paul Homes to find Cottee at the far post to complete his hat trick and secure three points for Everton.
