Managers constantly under the pressure of getting sacked, players eyeing moves to bigger clubs and the squad crumbling at every crucial point in the season was Chelsea in a nutshell in the 1992 season. Ian Porterfield and Dave Webb couldn’t work out Blues’ best team for the whole season and it was in indicative of the fact that goalkeeper Dave Beasant was dropped and loaned by Porterfield before he got the sack just for Webb to come in, recall the keeper from the loan, pick him and drop him again.

But the arrival of Glenn Hoddle, the mercurial manager who got Swindon promoted was a ray of hope for Chelsea. Andy Townsend and Graham Stuart had left for greener pastures. But the arrival of Gavin Peacock from Newcastle and Mark Stein from Stuart was a boost along with the manager himself who had declared that he would be player-manager at the age of 35.
