Roy Keane confirmed that day that he would play his last match for Nottingham Forest against Ipswich and rumours of a potential move to Manchester United and Blackburn were floating about in British Football. Dalglish was prepared to break the record of £3.3 million he paid for Alan Shearer a year ago. But it was thought that the premier league champions, Manchester United seemed favourite for the Irishman’s signature.

Alex Ferguson said “Its rubbish that we are only looking at English players. If we believe that the player is right for the club, we will get him, no matter what his nationality is. We’ll let the dust settle down after celebrations. In a couple of days, we will look at the reports on all the players and take it from there.”
