Wolverhampton Wanderers are the seventh most valuable club in the Premier League, according to new data. Wolves enjoyed a stunning 2018/19 season and sealed a seventh-place finish after promotion from the Championship. The club has improved further this season with progression to the Europa League last-16, while Nuno Espirito Santo’s side are also genuine contenders for a top four spot. And their growth under the Portuguese, combined with the shrewd business dealings of owners Fosun, has put the club in a very healthy position financially.
Football finance expert Kieran Maguire has calculated the value of the Premier League’s clubs, based on information obtained from the 2018/19 accounts. Wolves is supposedly worth £458million – 10 times what Fosun paid Steve Morgan to purchase the club four years ago – and only trail the ‘big six’ in the standings. Tottenham Hotspur, boosted by their magnificent new stadium, are top of the list and estimated to be worth a staggering £2.5billion, with Manchester City, United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea also ahead of Wolves.
Wolves made a pre-tax profit of almost £20million for the financial year ending in May 2019 and their turnover was £172.5million – a mind-blowing £146million increase on the previous year. Given the growth of prize assets Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and Ruben Neves during the course of the 2019/20 campaign, the £458million estimate is likely to increase.
