Players moving from premier league to France was very rare in those days and a player that was often confused with another Hughes from Manchester had taken a huge leap into French football that year. Former Manchester City player Michael Hughes talked about how he was often getting confused by people with Manchester United star striker Mark Hughes and the fact that he gave up on a three year deal at Maine Road to move to Strasbourg, a team that had just got a promotion a year earlier.

Michael Hughes said “Most of them (Strasbourg) thought I was Mark Hughes. I spent two months there before I signed for them. I’d never heard ofthem! They were in the second division last season and I thought I’d take a look. I want to stay here for three four years and then go to another European country. I had a three year deal on table at Manchester City but I knew there was no real future for me there. I’ll be honest, the money was better in France and I knew Peter Reid didn’t really fancy me.”
