Brentford goalkeeper David Raya has addressed his future following reported transfer interest from Everton. The 26-year-old has helped the Bees enjoy an excellent start to their Premier League season and was particularly impressive in last month’s 3-3 draw with Liverpool. Despite conceding on three occasions, the Spaniard produced a number of reflex saves to keep Brentford in the game. Both Arsenal and Everton are said to have shown an interest in Raya, who has now set the record straight on the situation.
David Raya said: “I’m happy at the club. I want to have a good season this year. We’ll see what happens in the summer. My ambitions are great, I’d like to play at the top. You always want to play for big clubs.”
Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for the 26-year-old when speaking after the Reds’ draw with Thomas Frank’s side in September, having been impressed with his distribution during the match. Klopp jokingly remarked that Raya could play as a No.10 based on his performance against Liverpool, comments the Brentford keeper ‘didn’t expect’ to hear.
David Raya said: “When I heard him say that, I was very surprised. I didn’t expect it at all. It’s a pleasure to hear those words and more from a coach like him. We’ve worked on it and the way to go out playing is to add one more player. We form a defence of four when we have the ball. The right central goes to his side, the left to his, and me in the middle with Pontus Jansson at the exit. It’s the way to break the pressure line made by the rival. I think our idea is that we can play in different ways. The style of the team is to keep possession, but in this category it’s very difficult to have the ball the whole game. We always play to win and we don’t shrink from anyone. That’s why I think people want to see us.”
