Wolverhampton Wanderers and the rest of the Premier League have been warned that Newcastle United’s new owners ‘are here to ‘create a consistently successful team’. In an open letter, Newcastle’s new non-executive chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan has revealed their plans to follow in City’s footsteps and become a superpower.
Yasir Al-Rumayyan said: “I also wanted to give you an understanding of what you can expect from us as owners and what our plans are for your club at this stage. Most importantly, you can expect ambition. Like you, we want to create a consistently successful team. We’re here to build long-term success for the club.”
According to a report in The Mirror, Newcastle’s owners are set to sack manager Steve Bruce and invest £250m in the club’s infrastructure and playing squad. Speaking to The Telegraph about his future,
Steve Bruce said: “I want to continue, I’d like the chance to show the new owners what I can do, but you have to be realistic and they may well want a new manager to launch things for them. New owners normally want a new manager. I’ve been around long enough to understand that. That decision is not up to me. I accept that and I will accept what comes my way. I have to wait to have those conversations with people when the time is right.”
Newcastle are under new ownership after the controversial Public Investment Fund (PIF) bought out Sports Direct tycoon Mike Ashley following an 18-month saga. PIF are backed by Saudi Arabia, but the Premier League have reached the conclusion that Newcastle will not be controlled by the state and have therefore allowed the takeover to be completed. Newcastle have immediately soared to top spot on the Premier League’s rich-list, with their owners even wealthier than Manchester City supremo Sheikh Mansour.
