Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves has revealed what was said between the players and referee Graham Scott following Newcastle United’s controversial goal at Molineux.
Ruben Neves said “We spoke to the ref and he said he didn’t stop the game because Sa got up, but that’s normal. I think he had a few seconds to stop the game, and if you don’t stop the game, Sa will of course get up to help the team. But it was too late. It’s really hard and maybe the ref could’ve stopped the game before Sa got up, but football is really fast.”
Fortunately for Wolves, it did not prove costly as they went on to claim a 2-1 victory. Hwang Hee-chan scored both their goals to give Lage the first home success of his tenure.
Ruben Neves said “Fortunately we came to the second half with the same spirit and we got the second goal,”
Republic of Ireland international Jeff Hendrick fired in an equaliser for Newcastle in Saturday’s Premier League encounter. Wolves keeper Jose Sa was left out of position as he attempted to shake off a knock sustained in the build-up. The hosts were unhappy that play was not stopped before Hendrick struck, with head coach Bruno Lage so incensed by the decision that he picked up a booking from the referee.
Wolves are 12th in the table with nine points from their opening seven league games. They visit Aston Villa when they return to action following the international break.
