Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn was back in the goals in spectacular fashion on Thursday night as he scored a dramatic overhead kick to grab Scotland a point in their World Cup qualifier against Austria.

John McGinn said: “I’ve watched it back a few times, a little bit surreal. It’s not a kind of goal that is normal for me but just delighted in the end to grab us a point with it. The boys said they didn’t celebrate it on the bench, they just laughed, they were as surprised as I was, but delighted it was a contribution that got us a point in the end.”

McGinn has only scored one goal for Villa so far this season, scoring the third goal in the memorable 7-2 win over Liverpool back in October. And the midfield was happy to end his ‘goal drought’ with a goal he ranks as one of the best he’s scored.

John McGinn added: “It’s right up there it definitely is. I think every goal you score for your country is incredible and amazing. It was just important for me last night to end the goal drought for both club and country, it had been getting on my mind and my nerves, I waited 85 minutes for it but the drought is finally over and hopefully, I can kick on now.”

Steve Clarke’s side looked to be facing defeat in their opening game as they bid to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. But with his nation 2-1 down in the 85th minute, McGinn ended a personal goal drought when he saw his acrobatic effort nestle into the back of the net.
