Ole Gunnar Solskjaer defended Fred for the manner of Leicester City’s first goal in Manchester United’s FA Cup quarter-final defeat and said mistakes when playing out from the back will be “acceptable”. The Norwegian has no plans to tell his team to abandon their principles of favouring clearing the lines after one error.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “We want them to build from the back. We’ve been really solid, we’ve been really good, we’ve built a foundation to play from with what we’ve done. Sometimes it goes wrong and that’s acceptable. Everyone can make a mistake and we win together and lose together, as a team.”

United equalised through Mason Greenwood in the first half, a well-constructed goal that involved contributions from Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek, but goals from Youri Tielemans and another for Iheanacho condemned them to a first domestic defeat on the road in 30 games.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said: “Top goal, great to see Mason having that instinct again, a good finish. Good from Paul and Donny creates the goal without even touching it, it was clever, that’s something to build on.”
