Neil Warnock says he expects Chris Wilder will not be out of work for too long after doing a ‘fabulous job’ at Sheffield United. He says that left him feeling disappointed with the way his Blades spell came to an end and he can see the similarities.
Neil Warnock said “Chris has done a fabulous job there,” he said in his press conference today ahead of the match at home to Preston tomorrow. But managers have to get on with owners and if it gets very stretched, Chris is more than within his rights to say what we wants having been there so long and done what he’s done. You have to feel you can work in a certain situation and he obviously felt that he couldn’t. That does not take away from what he’s done though, and I’m sure Chris will walk into another job in the not too distant future. It just shows you what football is like. We talk about the Championship, but the Premier League, wow, you don’t get any escape in the Premier League if you’re not right at it. If you can’t score goals you don’t have much of a chance. I think he’ll be disappointed but I think of all the teams in the Premier League, I think Sheffield United have suffered most because of the lack of fans. Bramall Lane is such a special place. It’s a goal head-start. It was disappointing yesterday to see them as they were, without any leadership and guidance, and it looked like that. But I’m sure they’ll buckle up and give it a go in the remainder of the season. But it is sad. Football is like that. I was there seven years and I felt let down when I left. I fell out with the hierarchy like Chris has and it can leave you bitter. But life goes on and when he gets his next club he’ll think it’s a breath of fresh air. He can go and enjoy himself again. That’s what I did and I’m sure Chris will. Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for. When you get success, I’ve had a few chairmen in my time who think it’s down to them and thought I was getting too much publicity and so on. But the manager is the one everyone wants to interview and speak to. It’s a team thing and everyone takes credit for success. I’ve always had my successes when I work with a good chairman and I have confidence in the guy above me running the club.”
