Mason Mount has admitted that Chelsea need to be winning games like the one against Southampton if they are to get to where they want to be.

Mason Mount said: “We want to be up there and we need to be winning these games. We want to be pushing to be as high as we want to be. We know with the squad we have and the quality we have in the club, we know we can be up there, we just need to keep working hard, learning every single day in the training ground and putting in the performances together, which we know we can.”

It was Mount’s second goal since Tuchel took charge, after scoring against Sheffield United in a 2-1 win at Bramall Lane recently, but it was his first penalty for the club, not in penalty shootouts. And the England international said that he was confident stepping up to take the spot kick, after being fouled by Danny Ings early in the second half.

Mason Mount added: “I have scored a couple in penalty shootouts, but that is my first one and it was long overdue. The last one I took I missed in the penalty shootout against Tottenham, so I was very confident in putting that right. I wanted to step up and score, so that wasn’t in my mind, I just wanted to score and get us back in the game.”

Thomas Tuchel was left frustrated at his side’s performance as they dropped points for just a second time during his time in charge, with the German left bemoaning the fact that the Blues failed to turn their dominance in possession into more chances and goals.
