#PL Stories- #SteveBruce continues to feel upbeat despite defeat against Crystal Palace #NUFC

Steve Bruce Newcastle

Steve Bruce has urged his side not to get too disheartened after Newcastle United’s 2-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace. The Magpies took the lead through Jonjo Shelvey but then collapsed before half-time and conceded twice for goals which proved to be decisive. Despite creating 21 goal attempts, the Magpies were unable to force the issue and left the field with another defeat to make it just six wins from 22 Premier League games this term.

Steve Bruce said: “I was pleased with the performance, we had an awkward 15 minutes where we’ve conceded two goals from a mistake and set-piece but apart from that I couldn’t be more pleased with how we went about our work. We had the chances but we just dropped that little bit deep again and that cost us. I think we’ve had 20 attempts on goal and two, three, four, five in the first half when we should have been more clinical.”

Bruce insisted though that his side are improving.

Steve Bruce said: “Our performance levels have been better certainly over the last few weeks. We have tried to implement change in the last month or so and what you’re looking for is a performance to go with it. As often in the Premier League, it’s defining moments. Apart from that 10-15 minute spell, we had the better chances and should have taken something from the game. Crystal Palace do what they do and go back to defend deep so you have to prise them open.”

Bruce had five attackers on the field by the end and went for the jugular but could not snare a point from the contest.

Steve Bruce added: “We had Ryan Fraser playing at right-back by the end to try and break them down but it was not enough. I said about a month ago after Sheffield United, we are going to try to change. The players had been comfortable for a long time. We are trying to change. It’s what I want to do and I think the players are enjoying it. Performance-wise, if we keep going the way we are, we will be okay.”
