Harry Redknapp believes Chris Wilder’s previous interest in Ben Davies is proof Liverpool have signed a player who can make the step up to the Premier League after the Preston North End defender swapped Deepdale for Anfield. Sheffield United’s interest has been long-standing and well-documented but the Blades chose not to pursue a move for the player in this transfer window, with Davies seen very much as the cover for knee injury victim Jack O’Connell. The Blades were unable to make assurances of the left-footed Davies being a first-team regular, particularly given the wages he would command, once O’Connell returned to fitness and with United’s Premier League status hanging in the balance, it was not the prestigious free transfer it might have been back in the autumn when the interest in him was first registered.
Harry Redknapp said: “There are some good players in the lower divisions, Championship, League One. Good players around who want the opportunity to come and play with better players at a better level. What convinces me that he’s a good player is that Chris Wilder tried to sign him I think with Sheffield United a year or so ago so they tell me. And he don’t (sic) sign bad players, I know they’re struggling Sheffield United but he’s a good judge, Chris Wilder. If he wanted to spend Sheffield United’s good money on him, he had to be a good player. And there are good players in that division, it’s a great opportunity for the kid.”
