#PremierLeagueStories – War of Words between #JamieCarragher & #ChrisWilder over criticism of #AaronRamsdale #SHUFC

Aaron Ramsdale

Chris Wilder admits Aaron Ramsdale was at fault for the second goal Sheffield United conceded at Chelsea on Saturday but is backing his summer signing to come through a tough period. The 22-year-old was singled out for criticism by Jamie Carragher and United supporters for his role in Ben Chilwell’s goal that put the home side 2-1 up after David McGoldrick had given United the lead. The left back took advantage of hesitancy between keeper and defender Max Lowe to profit from an inswinging cross to the far post.

Jamie Carragher said “I mean it’s two yards out from the line. The goalkeeper has got to do so much more, he’s got to be out there and be commanding. It almost hits Chilwell, he looks a bit frightened himself going in there and it hits him, he doesn’t want to get sandwiched between defender and goalkeeper. He’s got to be so much more commanding there Ramsdale.”

Chris Wilder said “He was at fault for the second goal, we won’t hide behind that, We had a young goalkeeper last year that made mistakes for us and we have another young goalkeeper here. That’s the road that we went down, so we have to stay with it. Did he mention the decent saves he made as well? OK, as long as there is consistency with it, In front of him is not great at the moment. We are conceding some really poor goals and we have to come through it, as we all do and he will be OK. He’s a positive character and a very good young goalkeeper who is playing in a team that is not doing as good as it should be, even though you are bang up against it when you play the teams we have had to over this little period.”
