Match Of The Day pundit Micah Richards felt the penalty given against Albion defender Tariq Lamptey in their 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace was ‘ridiculous’. The controversial incident of the game came in the 17th minute when Palace striker Michy Batshuayi went down in the box. After trying to get on the end of Andros Townsend’s cross. Referee Stuart Attwell had no hesitation in pointing to the spot. VAR referee Kevin Friend checked the penalty and felt there was no clear and obvious error so the penalty stood. Former Manchester City and England defender Richards was very critical of Attwell’s decision.
Micah Richards said: “The penalty is ridiculous, Lallana said it in his interview. He doesn’t know ‘what is a penalty and what isn’t anymore’. If you give this as a pen then you would be giving nine or ten a game. That is ridiculous. He has got his hands on Batshuayi, but there is not enough contact. I think that is a clear and obvious mistake and I think it should be overturned. As a defender, you need to use your hands in certain positions. He (Lamptey) is smaller, but it is not like he is dragging him anywhere he is just using his hands to put on his body so for me, that is not a penalty.”
After the game, Albion midfielder Adam Lallana admitted he was confused about, “What is and what isn’t a penalty anymore.”
