#PremierLeagueStories – #PapyMendy talks about how his fortunes changed at Leicester City & playing in Europa league #LCFC

Nampalys Mendy Leicester City

Papy Mendy was forced to consider his future this summer but said he had no doubts over continuing his stay at Leicester City once the offer of a new deal was on the table. Mendy has been a key figure in City’s fine start to the campaign, taking on the deep midfield role, first when Wilfred Ndidi had to step in at centre-back, and then when the Nigerian suffered a serious groin injury. His performances have been a very welcome surprise for City, not least because he was expected to be at a new club this season. Even as late as May, it seemed a new deal would not come Mendy’s way as his City contract, first signed when he arrived from Nice for £13m in 2016, came to a conclusion. After starting all four Premier League matches, the Frenchman has already surpassed the amount of pitch-time he was afforded last season. That comes as a relief after a period of uncertainty in the summer.

Papy Mendy said “Honestly, it was difficult because you have to think about changing clubs, This is normal. But when I had the opportunity to sign a new contract, I did it straight away, because I know the club and I know the players and I feel very well here. This season, we have a lot of games in the Europa League and the Premier League, and it was a big opportunity for me to play more, and that’s why I signed a new contract. Every season is different, but I’m still the same. I work in the same spirit whether I play or don’t play. Last season, I didn’t play a lot, but in every training session, I tried to give my best to try to make an opportunity to be in the squad. Now, I’m confident and want to give more for this club and my team-mates. (The competition for places) is good for the club. The club has a lot of good midfielders and a lot of options, and whenever anyone is on the pitch, they want to give the best for the team with a good spirit. It’s the same in every position. Look at (Daniel) Amartey, he went two years without playing and then came in and played very well. It shows the spirit in the team.Everyone wanted to play in the Champions League and we are a little bit disappointed about this, But now that season is gone, we have to focus on the new one. We will play in the Europa League. It’s a good competition and a good experience for the lads.”
