Kevin De Bruyne says Manchester City are gunning to win everything this season.
Kevin De Bruyne said “I think the motivation doesn’t change if you win or you lose,” De Bruyne said after the Blues won at Wolves for the first time under Guardiola. When you start a new season there is new aspirations, you want to win the most as possible and we want to win everything. For us, all four [trophies] is in the mind, that’s the mentality. It is obviously very hard but we came into today knowing that it is going to be a very hard game. We didn’t train a lot but I think the performance was really good and that’s good for us. We know when we saw the schedule when we started that it is tough, but we always go. We play game by game and the best team that is ready to play on Thursday will try and win their game.”
De Bruyne was widely expected to become the next City captain when David Silva left in summer, but players and coaches voted for his more senior teammate Fernandinho instead.
Kevin De Bruyne said “What we do every year is everybody votes for their captains and he came out on top. Everybody trusts him, he has been here for eight years so he knows the team in and out and deserves to lead this team. Obviously, he cannot be the only one and there are people that need to help. When you go on the pitch you need 11 captains in one way or another. He is the leader but the rest of the team needs to follow that, speak up or do whatever to help the team.”
Pep Guardiola and his team are under extra scrutiny to see if they can respond to losing their title to Liverpool and another tame Champions League exit. But uncertainty also fills the football air just as it hangs over the nation as a result of coronavirus and the UK government’s response to it; three City players have been forced to stay home in recent weeks after positive Covid-19 tests.
