West Ham virtually sealed their future in the premier league for one more year after winning 3-1 against Watford and manager David Moyes has revealed a mentality shift in the players since he took over. Ironically, David Moyes’ first match in charge of West Ham when he replaced Slaven Bilic as manager of the club in 2017 was a trip to Vicarage Road to face Watford. That match ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Hammers in Hertfordshire and not really much has changed for the club since then. Moyes reflected on his first visit to Vicarage Road as manager of the Hammers and how the team has changed since then.
David Moyes said “The biggest memory is that Marko Arnautovic came off with a sore finger, And I thought ‘my goodness what is this I have got here?’ I want to get away from a West Ham team that is soft. I want them to be harder and tougher and all those things as we are in a relegation battle. But not only did that show me something, it suddenly showed Marko something as well and ranwe turned him into something that nobody has seen. So I think from that day hopefully we became a better West Ham team from that day. We went on to finish the season strongly and get ourselves safe. But also the change to Marko was one of the biggest changes we had seen in that period. It [survival] will be absolutely massive for this club, For us to get anything else other than Premier league will not be good. It is so important. And more important due to the period we have come through, lockdown, no crowds, a difficult period for a lot of clubs. It is no different for West Ham. The key is for us to make sure we are a Premier League club and see if we can continue that.”
