Brendan Rodgers has tried to turn the tide on the anxiety that threatens to engulf Leicester City over the race for a Champions League spot. City has failed to win either of their matches since the restart, despite facing two relegation battlers, allowing Chelsea, Manchester United, Wolves, and Tottenham to gain ground. City is 15th in the 10-game form table, but Rodgers has pointed out several reasons to be positive as they approach an FA Cup quarter-final and the last seven matches in the Premier League.
Brendan Rodgers said “Apart from Liverpool, we’ve got the best defence in the league, and apart from Liverpool and Man City, we’ve scored the most goals, so we’re clearly a team that has done something right, We need to get that rhythm back again, and that intensity back in our game as quickly as we can. The teams (around City) have picked up the results since they’ve come back, and we’ve had two draws, so it’s not ideal. Whichever you want to spin it, positive or negative, we’re in the position through ourselves. We’re third in the league, in a great position. And it’s something with seven games to go, we aim to give absolutely everything to finish where we want to finish. If that doesn’t happen this year, we know at least we’ve given it everything. We’ve shown right up until 31 games that we’re worthy of being where we are. All the teams we are yet to play in the league we have beaten, apart from Manchester United, where we went close at Old Trafford. We’ll go into these games and look to get back to our level of performance, getting the intensity back. I’m also recognising it’s been such a big season for our players, and a lot of our players are young players, so we’ve had probably over this last period that inconsistency you get with young players, as one of the youngest squads in the league. But it doesn’t stop us pushing to finish as high as we can. We can only worry about ourselves. Those teams there are expected to finish above us and be above us, but currently we are where we are on merit, and we hope to finish the job off.”
